The truth hurts sometimes!✝️🙏🏽💪🏼

Many of us grow up hearing that family is everything and that loyalty to family bonds should be unbreakable. However, this narrative does not account for the reality many survivors of abuse face: their family environment may have been volatile and harmful. For these individuals, insisting on loyalty to abusive family members can actually impede their healing process and personal growth. From my personal experience and from conversations with others who have walked similar paths, breaking away from the expectation of unconditional family loyalty is a difficult but liberating step. It opens space for survivors to prioritize their own wellbeing and redefine what family means to them. Some find healing through building supportive chosen families—friends and allies who provide the trust and safety lacking in biological ties. Understanding that "family is not everything" does not mean dismissing the importance of relationships but recognizing that our mental and emotional health must come first. This perspective is supported by psychological research which shows that healthy boundaries are essential for recovery from trauma. Moreover, healing often requires external support—therapy, support groups, or communities that understand trauma’s impact. As a survivor or as someone who supports survivors, acknowledging the complex dynamics of family can help in advocating for self-care and empowerment rather than blind loyalty. Finally, shifting the narrative around family loyalty is vital for societal change. It encourages open conversations about abuse and mental health, and promotes a culture where survivors are validated and supported rather than silenced or pressured to conform. In conclusion, the truth may hurt sometimes, but embracing these truths about family and healing is a courageous and necessary step towards genuine recovery and self-love.
