Drawing characters from Death Note has always been a passion of mine! There’s just something about the intricate designs and compelling personalities that makes them so rewarding to sketch. Recently, I spent some time really focusing on two fan favorites: Mello and Misa Amane, and I'm thrilled to share my latest pencil sketches with you all. When I started on Mello, I really wanted to capture his edgy, intense aura. His distinctive scar is such a key feature, and getting the shading right on his fur-collared jacket was a fun challenge. For her, I focused on her signature look – the pigtails, those expressive blushing cheeks, and often a playful pose like holding a phone or forming a heart shape with her hands. Her youthful energy is a stark contrast to some of the darker themes in Death Note, and I love trying to capture that duality. The challenge with Misa is making her look both adorable and a bit mischievous, which is a big part of her appeal. Beyond Mello and Misa, the world of Death Note offers so many incredible characters to draw. I know many of you are often looking for how to draw Light Yagami or even a detailed Ryuk drawing. While these recent pieces focus on Mello and Misa, I'm always thinking about tackling other characters too. Capturing Light Yagami's cunning expressions and the subtle shift from student to mastermind is incredibly complex. His eyes alone can tell a whole story! Similarly, a Ryuk drawing needs to convey his eerie, otherworldly presence, often with his signature grin and large, watchful eyes. For anyone else looking to try their hand at Death Note fan art, whether it’s a simple death note sketch or a more complex manga panel recreation, here are a few tips I've picked up. Pay close attention to anatomy and proportions, as the Death Note anime art style, while stylized, has a strong foundation. Exaggerating expressions helps to convey the intense emotions, which are central to the series. Don't be afraid to experiment with different shading techniques when doing black and white art; cross-hatching, stippling, or simple blending can all add depth and mood.
