The Urgent Call
Have you ever shared the Good News of Jesus with someone in your life?
When Jesus was teaching and training the twelve disciples, he often used imagery and metaphors that were part of their culture to communicate important truths to them. In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus relates the work that He is doing to a farmer’s work in the field.
Jesus says that the people who do not know Jesus are like a field of grain that's ready to be harvested. But, there are not enough workers to go and harvest among the fields. Jesus says to pray that God would send more workers to gather the harvest.
Essentially, there are people who are ready and willing to hear and respond to the Gospel message—the hope that Jesus brings for every person. But when Jesus says "the workers are few" (Matthew 9:38), what He really means is: there are not enough people sharing the Good News with others.
As Christians, we are entrusted with the free gift of eternal life, and we’re tasked with sharing that message with others. However, many Christians keep their faith to themselves.
We are to be bold in sharing the message of the cross with other people so that they can experience new life in Jesus, too.
Take a few minutes today to consider what small step you can take to begin sharing Jesus with other people. Pray for God to give you courage, and then step out and begin sharing with others.

Reflecting on Matthew 9:37-38, I’ve come to see the urgency in Jesus’ metaphor of the harvest field as more relevant than ever. In today’s fast-paced world, many people are seeking meaning and hope but may not realize it until we share the Gospel with them. From my personal experience, starting with small conversations about faith can open doors unexpectedly. It might be as simple as sharing a verse or a testimony during a casual chat. Initially, I found it intimidating, but praying for boldness—as Jesus instructed—gave me confidence to reach out. Another important aspect I’ve noticed is the need for more workers, not only in formal ministry but in our everyday lives. The ‘plentiful harvest’ includes neighbors, colleagues, and friends who are ready to hear about Jesus. When I began to view my interactions as opportunities to plant seeds of faith, the hesitation faded. I also found that inviting others to read or explore the Bible app, like the YouVersion Bible app mentioned in the post, can be a gentle way to encourage spiritual growth without pressure. The key is being consistent and genuine, showing love and care through actions as well as words. Praying for the ‘Lord of the harvest’ to send out workers challenged me to actively be that worker. It made me realize evangelism is not just for pastors or missionaries—it’s a calling for all believers. Taking that step out of comfort zones not only helps others but strengthens our own faith journey. If you’re unsure where to start, try asking God to reveal one person to whom you can share the Good News. Keep it simple and trust that even a small effort can make a big difference in someone’s life. The harvest truly is plentiful; we just need more willing hearts to share the message of Jesus’ love and salvation.
