Day 5: The dinosaurs ran wild and tried to attack the elves!! Buddy and Jovie are hoping the mini marshmallows will help and stop the dinos from attacking them!!!
Hey fellow Elf on the Shelf enthusiasts! I’ve been getting so many questions about how we keep our elves, Buddy and Jovie, so active and creative each year. It’s definitely a fun challenge, and I wanted to share some of my favorite tips for making the magic last, especially when you're running low on inspiration. First off, don't overthink it! Some of our best Elf on the Shelf moments have been the simplest. Like the time Buddy built a Hot Wheels track slide and hilariously got himself stuck upside down! It was such a hit with the kids, proving you don't need elaborate props. Just look around your house – you probably have tons of stuff already that can be repurposed. Think toy cars, building blocks, even kitchen utensils can become part of an elf’s adventure. Another big one for us is involving the kids (subtly, of course!). Sometimes, I'll 'accidentally' leave out a few crafting supplies or toys, and the next morning, Buddy and Jovie have used them in a new setup. For example, when they were attacked by dinosaurs, the kids were convinced the mini marshmallows we left out helped save them! It sparks their imagination and makes them feel even more connected to the magic. You can also have your elves leave notes asking the kids for ideas for the next day, which is a great way to get them invested. When you're completely stumped, try themed nights. One night could be a 'movie night' with popcorn and tiny blankets for the elves. Another could be a 'sporty night' where they're playing with small balls or even hanging from a basketball hoop. We even had a 'story time' night where Buddy gathered all the plushies for Jovie, which was super sweet and easy to set up. Don't forget about using everyday items for quick setups. Toothbrushes and toothpaste can become a fun 'brush your teeth' reminder. Cereal boxes can be turned into a fort. Even just hiding your elf in a funny spot, like inside a tissue box or peeking out of a cookie jar, can get a giggle. The key is to make it unexpected and a little bit mischievous. For those days when you're really short on time, having a few go-to ideas in your back pocket is a lifesaver. Maybe your elf is 'reading' a book, or having a pretend tea party with other toys. Using strings to make them 'swing' from a light fixture or a curtain rod is another simple but effective trick. And remember the slide from the Hot Wheels track? That's always a winner! I also find it helpful to plan a few days in advance, especially for the bigger setups. But honestly, the spontaneity is often what makes it so fun. The reactions from my kids when they discover Buddy and Jovie's latest escapade make all the effort totally worth it. It’s such a special tradition that brings so much joy to our home during the holidays. Hope these tips help you create some unforgettable moments with your own elves!
