I was so tired this week but we made it! 🥲 #lexisb___ #fyp #beforevsafterwork #nightshiftrn
Working five consecutive 12-hour night shifts as a registered nurse is no small feat—I’ve been there, and the exhaustion is real. These long stretches of night duties can affect both physical and mental health, but with the right strategies, you can push through and maintain your well-being. One key aspect is managing fatigue. I found that prioritizing quality sleep during daylight hours is essential. Using blackout curtains and minimizing noise helped me catch more restful sleep despite the unusual hours. Staying hydrated and eating balanced meals at regular intervals provided me with consistent energy throughout the shifts. Another challenge is maintaining focus and compassion when you’re physically drained. Taking short, mindful breaks whenever possible allowed me to recharge even if briefly. Also, connecting and sharing experiences with colleagues working the same night shifts helped me feel supported and reminded me I wasn’t alone in feeling tired. Before starting a series of night shifts, I also make sure to prepare mentally, setting positive intentions and reminding myself why I chose this profession. The sense of accomplishment after completing the grueling schedule is rewarding and keeps me motivated. If you’re about to face multiple night shifts in a row, remember to listen to your body and seek support when needed. Self-care isn’t a luxury but a necessity to sustain the demanding role of a nurse during night shifts. It's tough, but with patience and care, you can make it through stronger each time.
