first week of college reality vs expectations
I didn’t know what to expect when college started. Here are some things I realized within my first week of school.
1. You might have homework even within your first week of classes. It may not be a lot, but it will be something. As you get older, and into more courses specific to your major, this will be common to have homework even in the first week of the class.
2. You have unassigned assigned seats. Where you sit on the first day is where you will sit for the rest of the course. Make sure to choose a good spot on the first day!
3. Go early to sports games. Seats fill up fast. Tailgating or having something before games is very common. Go with a group of friends and get in line early.
If you are a college student, what other advice would you give to incoming freshman?

Starting college can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially as students adjust their expectations to reality. One of the first surprises is the presence of homework even in the first week. While it might not be heavy initially, it sets the tone for an academic routine where assignments become a regular part of the weekly schedule, especially in courses tied closely to your major. Understanding this early helps maintain good study habits. Another important aspect is seating arrangements. Many new students expect to choose a different seat each day or sit wherever they like, but often the first-day seat becomes your permanent spot for the entire course. Choosing a comfortable and strategic location—such as near the front to engage better or towards aisles for easy exits—can impact focus and interaction. For those interested in college sports, the reality differs significantly from expectations. Sporting event seats fill rapidly, and it’s common to line up hours before doors open, especially with popular games. Tailgating and pre-game gatherings are key social activities that help build friendships and community spirit among students. Going early with a group can enhance the experience, making it memorable while securing good vantage points. In addition to these realities, freshmen should embrace proactive strategies such as time management, socializing, and campus involvement to ease the transition into college life. Joining clubs and study groups can provide support and deepen engagement with the campus environment. By anticipating these realities and planning accordingly, new college students can reduce surprises and build a successful first week and beyond.
