What yall think about people “gatekeeping”… #fyp
Gatekeeping is a common phenomenon where individuals or groups control access to something, whether knowledge, communities, or experiences. From my own experience, I've noticed that gatekeeping often stems from a desire to protect what people value or from feeling threatened by newcomers. However, it can unintentionally create barriers and exclusivity that stifle community growth. In many online or offline communities, gatekeeping shows up when veterans question the legitimacy of newcomers or when rules are strictly enforced to exclude outsiders. While some level of quality control can be useful, I've found that being too restrictive discourages fresh perspectives and can harm overall cohesion. A healthier approach is to recognize why gatekeeping happens and address underlying insecurities or fears. Encouraging open conversations and valuing diverse contributions can transform gatekeeping into guidance and mentorship instead of exclusion. Personally, I choose not to be upset when people gatekeep because it often reveals more about their own experiences and anxieties than about me. Instead, I aim to demonstrate openness and invite others to share their stories, creating a constructive environment where everyone feels welcome. Ultimately, understanding gatekeeping helps us build more inclusive and supportive communities, whether online or in real life. By fostering empathy and communication, we can move beyond gatekeeping and embrace connection.
