I’ve Been Renting for 5 Years; Here’s What I Know

I’ve been renting for about five years now, across three different apartments, and I’ve learned a lot along the way 🏡✨

The first thing is to check everywhere when you’re looking for a place. Zillow, Apartments.com, local rental agencies, Facebook Marketplace; even Craigslist if you use good judgment. Some of the best deals I’ve found came from places outside the big-name rental sites 📱

Another lesson: know your rights. One place tried to deny me an ESA even with documentation, which was illegal. I reported it and won a settlement, plus they had to go through ADA training. Do not let landlords or management companies push you around. Housing is too important to just “let it slide” ⚖️

I also learned how important it is to read reviews about property management. In one apartment, we dealt with bees coming through ductwork (I’m allergic), constant AC issues, and charges for repairs that should have been covered. The management was corporate and didn’t care. In contrast, my current complex is locally owned, responsive, and even gives us a rent discount for doing the yard work 🌿

Another tip; amenities aren’t everything. My current place doesn’t have a pool or a gym, but it has a huge balcony, a great kitchen, and respectful maintenance staff. I’d rather save money and enjoy my actual apartment than pay for things I don’t use.

If I’ve learned anything in five years, it’s that a good management company makes all the difference. Spaces matter, but the people who run them matter more.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned renting?
