Cleaning rules I only made as an adult ๐Ÿงผ

I didnโ€™t grow up with โ€œsystems.โ€

I grew up reacting. Cleaning only when things felt overwhelming or embarrassing or out of control.

In my 20s, I stopped trying to be perfectly tidy and started making rules that actually support my life.

Not aesthetic rules. Not influencer rules. Just quiet little agreements with myself that keep my space from spiraling.

These arenโ€™t about being clean all the time. Theyโ€™re about making my home easier to come back to. Easier to rest in. Easier to reset when Iโ€™m tired or overstimulated.

I donโ€™t follow all of them every day. But having them there has changed how my home feels, especially on hard weeks.

Adulting, for me, wasnโ€™t learning how to clean better.

It was learning how to clean kinder ๐Ÿค

... Read moreAdopting adult cleaning rules doesnโ€™t mean committing to an all-day deep clean every time you get overwhelmed; instead, itโ€™s about creating manageable habits that fit into your life and respect your energy levels. One of the most effective adult cleaning principles is the rule of "No dishes left in the sink overnight." This rule supports a peaceful morning by ensuring the kitchen looks tidy and ready for a fresh start. Even when youโ€™re tired, this small task can make a big difference in how your day feels. Another beneficial habit is dedicating just five minutes before bed to a quick tidy-up. This is not about deep cleaning but a reset to prevent clutter from piling up and becoming stressful. For example, clearing one โ€œhot spotโ€ each dayโ€”such as the kitchen counter, coffee table, or nightstandโ€”can keep your living spaces organized without feeling overwhelming. Laundry management is another area where kindness and flexibility come into play. Recognizing that laundry doesn't need to be completely finished to count as progress encourages a healthy mindset. Washed clothes, even if not yet put away, reduce the stress of accumulated chores. Using cleaning wipes like Clorox disinfecting wipes for quick spot cleaning is a great practice that makes maintaining cleanliness more efficient and less time-consuming. These wipes help keep surfaces sanitized with minimal effort, crucial for busy adults balancing multiple responsibilities. Importantly, these guidelines arenโ€™t strict rules but rather supportive agreements with yourself. They prioritize kindness and practicality over perfectionism, reflecting an adult approach to cleaning that accommodates fluctuating energy levels and mental health needs. This mindset shiftโ€”from reacting to messes to proactively maintaining a calm, livable spaceโ€”creates a home environment that is easier to return to and more restful, especially during stressful times. Implementing these adult cleaning rules can enhance your homeโ€™s overall tranquility, making everyday life smoother and more enjoyable. They emphasize progress, not perfection, allowing you to care for your space in a way that uplifts rather than overwhelms you.

I've been doing the "reset" before bed and holy crap does it make a difference. just tidying up the night before makes it look so much cleaner in the morning. I tried the "no dishes" rule but almost every day I just don't have the energy to hand wash dishes (chronically ill and no dishwasher) but I do make sure they're stacked neatly out of the way, then I start soaking them the next morning while I'm making breakfast and wash them once everyone is done eating
