This often limits patience for the decades-long research fusion demands, which is why some investors consider it not cost-effective. In contrast, China treats nuclear fusion as a critical national strategy rather than just an investment project. With 70% of its oil dependent on imports, energy security is a top priority. China’s government provides substantial funding and resources, enabling faster development cycles—sometimes building experimental devices within 1.5 years compared to possibly 20 years in the US. Fusion fuel, derived from seawater, is nearly limitless and produces minimal nuclear waste, making it ideal for sustainable energy. From personal experience following these developments, China’s long-term commitment and centralized planning appear to accelerate breakthroughs that could transform energy worldwide. The challenge remains in converting fusion ignition experiments, such as those using lasers that briefly produce more energy than consumed, into continuous, economically viable power generation. While the US excels in innovation driven by competition, China's national-level focus could prove decisive in achieving practical fusion energy first. In my view, the future of energy depends not only on scientific breakthroughs but also on priorities and funding models that sustain persistent efforts beyond immediate profits.
