How to keep your plants clean + healthy

🌿🪴✨ It’s plant care day, and here’s my game plan to keep my green babies thriving!

1️⃣ Dust and clean off plant leaves 🌱✨: Clean leaves = happy plants! Dust blocks sunlight and makes it harder for them to photosynthesize. I’m using a soft cloth and some lukewarm water to gently wipe them down. They’re already looking so much fresher.

2️⃣ Repot plants that have outgrown their current pot 🪴🔄: Some of my plants have been giving me the look—you know, the one that says, “I need more room!” So, I’m upgrading their homes with fresh pots and soil. Time for some major glow-ups!

3️⃣ Check for pests 🐛👀: Nobody invited spider mites or fungus gnats to this party, so I’m inspecting each plant carefully. Prevention is everything, and I’ll deal with any troublemakers ASAP.

4️⃣ Add slow-release fertilizer to the soil 🌱🍽️: It’s like a multivitamin for plants! Slow-release fertilizer keeps them fed for weeks, so I don’t have to worry about them running out of nutrients anytime soon.

5️⃣ Give plants away that you don’t love anymore 💔🪴➡️💚: Let’s be honest, not every plant sparks joy forever. If there’s one I’ve fallen out of love with, I’m finding it a new home with someone who’ll appreciate it more.

6️⃣ Rotate your plants that live in a window 🌞↩️: My plants love a good stretch, but if they lean too much toward the light, it’s time to rotate them. A little turn every now and then keeps them balanced and growing evenly!

Taking care of plants is such a rewarding ritual. It’s not just about making them look pretty—it’s about creating a happy, healthy environment for them to thrive. 🌿💚

... Read moreSince we're talking about keeping our plant babies thriving, let's dive a little deeper into one of the most common anxieties for any plant parent: pests! My original checklist mentioned checking for troublemakers, but honestly, dealing with them can feel like a whole separate battle. For me, the most frequent culprits are those annoying fungus gnats. They seem to appear out of nowhere, buzzing around your beautiful plants and reminding you that something isn't quite right. The key with fungus gnats, I've learned, is prevention. They absolutely love damp soil, which is why overwatering is their best friend. My first line of defense is always to let the top inch or two of soil dry out completely between waterings. This makes the environment far less appealing for them to lay their eggs. I also make sure all my pots have excellent drainage – no standing water in saucers! Sometimes, I'll even add a layer of horticultural sand or diatomaceous earth to the very top of the soil. It acts as a physical barrier, making it hard for the adult gnats to lay eggs and for the larvae to emerge. It’s a simple trick, but it really helps cut down their numbers before they become a full-blown infestation. If I do spot those tiny black flies, it's time for action! My go-to natural remedies are sticky traps – those bright yellow ones are fantastic for catching adults and giving you an idea of the population size. For the larvae living in the soil, I often turn to diluted neem oil or mosquito bits. Neem oil is a natural insecticide that disrupts their life cycle. I mix it according to the package directions and use it as a soil drench during watering. Mosquito bits contain a bacteria called BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) that specifically targets gnat larvae without harming plants, pets, or beneficial insects. I just sprinkle them on the soil surface and water them in, or I soak them in my watering can for about 30 minutes before watering. Beyond fungus gnats, it's always good practice to regularly inspect all your plants for other common pests like spider mites or mealybugs. I make it a habit to look closely at the undersides of leaves and along stems during my watering routine. Early detection is everything! If you catch them when there are just a few, wiping them off with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or a quick spray with insecticidal soap can often solve the problem without needing stronger measures. Remember, a healthy plant is more resilient to pest attacks, so combining these pest control strategies with good general care (like the cleaning, repotting, and fertilizing we talked about) creates a strong defense system for your green family. It's truly satisfying to see your plants thriving and pest-free!
