Taekwondo isn't just about traditional forms and sparring; there's a whole world of 'tricking' that can really elevate your game and make your movements incredibly dynamic and exciting. I've been on this journey for a while, and let me tell you, it's so rewarding to see your hard work pay off with a new, complex move! One of my absolute favorite techniques to both learn and teach in Taekwondo tricking is the question mark kick. It's such a deceptive and powerful move that can really catch an opponent off guard, or just look incredibly cool in a demonstration! For those unfamiliar, the 'question mark kick' (often called a 'hook kick' or 'crescent kick' setup) starts like a front kick or roundhouse kick, but then, mid-air, you change the trajectory. Your knee comes up, then your leg extends and hooks around, almost drawing a question mark shape in the air before connecting with the target. It's all about that hip rotation and snap! Mastering this kick really takes practice, but it's totally achievable. Here's how I broke it down: Start Basic: Make sure your front kick and roundhouse kick are solid. The question mark kick builds on these fundamentals. The Deception: The key is the initial chambering. Lift your knee as if going for a front kick. This can draw an opponent's guard up. The Hook: Instead of extending straight, rotate your hips powerfully, bringing your heel up and around to strike. Imagine trying to hook something with your foot. Practice this slowly, focusing on that 'question mark' path. Target Practice: Use a focus mitt or a partner holding a pad. Aim for the side of the head or torso. The power comes from the hip rotation and the snap of the leg. Don't just swing your leg; use your whole body. Balance and Control: This kick requires good balance. Incorporate balance drills into your routine. The more controlled you are, the faster and cleaner your kick will be. Once you nail the question mark kick, the real fun begins: combining it into awesome Taekwondo tricking sequences! I love finding ways to flow from one move to another. For example, you could start with a spin hook kick, land, and immediately transition into a question mark kick. Or, if you're really feeling it, try a butterfly kick into a question mark kick. The possibilities are endless, and that's what makes tricking so addictive. My biggest tip for creating combinations is to practice transitions. Don't just think about the individual kicks; think about how your body moves between them. How do you shift your weight? What's the optimal foot placement for the next move? Record yourself, watch it back, and identify areas for improvement. It’s amazing what you can spot when you watch your own movements. Remember, safety first! Always warm up properly and cool down.
