... Read moreBringing a new Morkie puppy like our Tessa into your home is such an exciting time! As you saw, her mix of white, brown, and black fur is just adorable, and seeing her explore in her little purple harness has been a highlight. If you're thinking about adding a furry friend, especially a Morkie, here are some things I've learned that might help make the transition smooth and joyful for everyone, including your new family member.
First, preparation is key. Before Tessa arrived, I made sure we had all the essentials: a comfortable bed, food and water bowls, puppy-safe toys, and, of course, puppy food. A small crate or playpen can be a lifesaver for potty training and giving them a safe space. For car rides, like when we brought Tessa home in her car seat, ensuring they’re secure and comfortable is so important. It helps them feel safe and makes travel less stressful.
Introducing a new puppy to children requires a bit of patience and guidance. My kids were absolutely thrilled, as you can imagine! We spent time teaching them how to gently interact with Tessa, how to hold her carefully, and the importance of letting her rest when she needs to. It’s a wonderful way to teach responsibility and empathy. Seeing them smiling together, both indoors and outdoors, has been truly heartwarming.
The first few days are all about adjustment. Tessa was surprisingly calm, but every puppy is different. We made sure she had a consistent feeding schedule and took her out frequently for potty breaks. Accidents happen, and that's okay! We celebrated every success and kept a positive attitude. Giving her a quiet, cozy spot to retreat to also helped her feel secure as she got used to her new surroundings and the family hustle.
Morkies, being a mix of Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier, are known for being affectionate and playful, yet can also be quite adaptable, like our quiet Tessa. Regular play sessions, short walks outdoors (once fully vaccinated), and plenty of cuddles are essential for their development and bonding. While her fur is beautiful, remember that Morkies do require regular grooming to prevent matting, which is something I'm learning more about each day!
Having Tessa has already brought so much extra love and laughter into our lives. From watching her follow us everywhere to hearing her cute little voice when she wants attention, every moment is precious. If you're considering a Morkie or any new puppy, be prepared for a journey filled with joy, a few challenges, and endless unconditional love. It's truly a rewarding experience for the whole family!
