What Is ENT?👂👃🩺👩🏾⚕️
ENT is going to be my second rotation of my clinical year, so let’s talk about what it is. ENT stands for ear, nose and throat, but the actual name of the specialty is otolaryngology. Otolaryngologists are surgeons who specialize in managing conditions of the head and neck. They’re called a lot of different things like ENT head and neck, surgeons, otolaryngologists, but they all mean the same thing.
The specialty itself combined surgical techniques with medical techniques to manage these conditions. I will spend a week on this rotation, learning, a lot of general otolaryngology skills and seeing a variety of patients.
Some common ENT procedures that I might see include removing the thyroid gland, repairing an eardrum, perforation, and sinus surgery. I might also see some more complex surgeries that deal with a variety of tumors.
If you wanted to become an overlay oncologist, you would do med school for four years, and then complete residency of five more years.
