Cavatappi Pasta Casserole Bake

This Cavatappi pasta and Italian sausage dish is not only super easy but was also a hit with everyone in my family. It’s perfect for a weeknight meal and my daughter loved it so much she even deemed it school-lunch worthy. It’s definitely a go to meal for us that doesn’t require too much time to make.

Here's the recipe:

INGREDIENTS

1 pound of Cavatappi pasta, cooked according to the package instructions

2 jars of pasta sauce, separated: I used Bertolli Olive Oil and Garlic 24 oz

1 cup of mozzarella balls

1 pound of italian sauce, cooked and crumbled

1- 8 oz bag of shredded mozzarella cheese

1 tsp italian seasoning

2 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp dried parsley flakes

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13 x 9 pan with cooking spray.

Add the pasta to the pan and spread it out evenly. Top it with one jar of the sauce and mix it thoroughly to coat the pasta.

Add the mozzarella balls to the pasta and stir so that they're pretty evenly distributed.

Stir in the cooked sausage and mix.

Add the other jar of pasta sauce on top of the pasta mixture.

Top with the shredded mozzarella cheese.

Sprinkle the italian seasoning, garlic powder, and parsley flakes on top.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted.

What I love most about it is how versatile and comforting it is, truly making it a staple in my kitchen. While the original recipe is fantastic, I've picked up a few tips and variations over time that make it even more adaptable and delicious for any occasion. Ever wondered why cavatappi is such a perfect choice for a hearty casserole like this? I used to just grab any short pasta, but learning about cavatappi's unique spiral shape changed my pasta bake game! Its corkscrew grooves are absolutely amazing at catching and holding onto all that rich tomato sauce, melted mozzarella, and savory sausage. This means every single bite is packed with flavor and texture. Plus, its sturdy shape holds up incredibly well during baking, so you don't end up with mushy pasta, which is a common pitfall in baked pasta dishes. When I'm cooking the cavatappi, a little trick I've learned is to boil it a minute or two less than the package instructions for al dente. Since it's going to continue cooking in the oven, this ensures it stays perfectly textured, not overdone. While Italian sausage is a classic and delicious choice, I've experimented with other proteins, and they work beautifully too, making this an even more adaptable easy dinner! If you're trying to lighten things up, cooked ground chicken or turkey is a fantastic swap – just remember to season it well with Italian herbs, garlic powder, and a pinch of red pepper flakes to mimic that sausage flavor. For those super hectic nights, shredded rotisserie chicken is an absolute game-changer; it cuts down on prep time significantly! And for my vegetarian friends, you can easily make this a hearty meat-free pasta casserole by adding cooked lentils, chickpeas, or a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms and zucchini. The key is to make it work for your family’s tastes and what you have on hand. Speaking of making it your own, let's talk cheese! The mozzarella is non-negotiable for that classic melty top, but for a truly elevated, four cheese pasta experience, I love layering in different kinds. A sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano adds a sharp, salty kick that really enhances the tomato sauce. Sometimes, I'll even mix some creamy ricotta cheese with an egg and a pinch of nutmeg to create dollops throughout the bake – it adds a wonderful creaminess, almost like a lasagna, and makes it incredibly rich. A thin layer of provolone under the mozzarella can also add a delightful tang. Don't be afraid to experiment with your favorite cheeses! To sneak in more nutrients and color, I often sauté some baby spinach, diced bell peppers (red or green work great!), or sliced mushrooms and mix them in with the pasta before baking. They wilt down beautifully and add extra goodness without much fuss. If you’re a fan of a little heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes stirred into the sauce gives it a pleasant kick. And for a fresher feel, I sometimes stir in a tablespoon of pesto or a handful of fresh basil right before baking. These little additions really elevate the dish and make it feel gourmet, even though it's still such an easy dinner. One of the best things about this spiral pasta bake is how well it preps ahead. I often assemble the entire dish in my 13x9 pan, cover it tightly with foil, and pop it in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. Just remember to add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if it's going into the oven cold. Leftovers are also fantastic! I store them in an airtight container for 3-4 days, and they reheat beautifully in the microwave or oven, making for a super quick lunch. It’s truly an easy dinner that keeps on giving, making your meal planning a breeze!
