Before we get into it let’s ask the question “Is the niqab mandatory?” Here’s my very honest response; yes. Although the Quran doesn’t use the words hijab and niqab , it does tell us to cover.

Prof:

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments1 except what normally appears.2 Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments3 except to their husbands, their fathers, their fathers-in-law, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, their fellow women, those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession, male attendants with no desire, or children who are still unaware of women’s nakedness. Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments. Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O believers, so that you may be successful.” 24:31

One thing I struggle with is upholding some of the etiquette of a Muslim woman in public spaces. Not on purpose, I’m just being my regular self in my own little world. It often feels like masking when I’m not smiling and being my normal bubbly self. But as a Muslim woman you’re supposed to keep yourself together. Not laughing all loud etc like myself 🤭 Wearing the niqab made me feel protected and gave me that extra boost of security I needed. With the niqab I didn’t have people (men) telling me I have a beautiful smile or nice lips 🫠 Considering the whole the idea of modesty overall is to protect you from such a thing, I feel the niqab seals the deal. I still felt beautiful & confident. I would absolutely wear it again. In fact, I hope wear it full time one day. InshaAllah.

Here’s the down side. The jilbab will try to take you out every chance it gets! Since I currently don’t own no a niqab that’s separate. I just pulled my jilbab up over my face. You can imagine that’s not very practical. 😂 I struggled to blow my nose. I had to keep pulling it down. Also, although I didn’t eat or drink in public spaces while I was wearing it, how am I supposed to eat or drink anything 🫠 you see the issues there.

Overall, this was a great experience and I added niqabs so my wishlist.

Tell me about your first time wearing niqab. Was it a smooth experience for you or did it take some getting used to? Also, what made you decide to put it on? Let’s chat in the comments.

... Read moreBuilding on my first experience, I wanted to share a bit more about the practical side of wearing a niqab and what I've learned from others in the community. One of the biggest concerns, as I mentioned, is eating and drinking in public. It definitely took some getting used to! Many sisters I've spoken with recommend carrying a reusable straw for drinks – it makes it so much easier and discreet. For food, if I'm out, I usually opt for something I can eat easily without needing to lift my niqab too much, or I find a private corner. Some niqab designs even have a discreet opening or are made from softer, more flexible fabrics that make these tasks a little less challenging. When I was out walking down the sidewalk, past residential buildings, I definitely noticed how much I needed to adjust the fabric, especially trying to breathe comfortably in warmer weather. Finding lightweight fabric is key! Another aspect I've been exploring is integrating the niqab seamlessly into my wardrobe. While I used my jilbab in my first attempt, investing in actual niqabs is on my wishlist. There are so many beautiful styles and fabrics available – from soft, breathable cottons to elegant chiffons. Pairing a black niqab with a long brown coat, for instance, creates a modest yet chic look that helps me feel put-together. It's about finding what feels comfortable and confident for you, and there are many Muslimah brands now catering to diverse styles. I've also learned that some sisters prefer specific niqab styles, like those with ties or elastic bands, for a secure fit, especially if they wear glasses or sunglasses underneath. It’s all about personal preference and what works best for your daily activities and comfort. Beyond the physical adjustments, the emotional and spiritual impact has also been profound. While the initial feeling of protection was strong, I've noticed a deeper sense of inner peace and self-assurance growing. It shifts the focus from external appearances to internal character, which is incredibly liberating. It's a journey of embracing my identity as a Muslimah and finding strength in modesty. I've found that preparing for social interactions, like meeting new people or attending events, often means being ready to politely answer questions or simply exude warmth through my eyes and demeanor. Sometimes, people might stare or have questions, but I've found that a kind smile (even if unseen) and a confident posture go a long way. It’s about owning your choice and living your truth, understanding that your intention is what matters most. For anyone considering wearing a niqab, I'd say start slow at home or in familiar surroundings, experiment with different styles and fabrics to find your comfort zone, and most importantly, listen to your heart and what brings you closer to Allah. This journey is unique for everyone, and it's beautiful to see how sisters embrace it with grace and conviction.
