25 things to declutter now

Your home should be a sanctuary, not a source of stress. 🌿

Visual clutter like piles of mail, scattered shoes, and laundry left out can weigh on your mind more than you realize. But here’s the good news: every small step toward decluttering clears not just your space, but your mind too!

I start by tackling one thing at a time and my mood transforms along with the environment!

Let’s create a space that brings you peace in 2025. What’s the first thing you’re clearing out? ✨

... Read moreYou know that nagging feeling when you walk into a room and just feel... tense? For me, it took a while to realize that much of that 'mental stress' wasn't from my to-do list, but from the 'visual clutter' all around me. It's truly amazing how much our environment influences our inner peace. I used to think I was just messy, but then I started understanding that every item without a home, every pile, was a tiny mental burden. Let me share a few examples from my own journey, focusing on some of those 25 things you might be overlooking. Take 'piles of mail,' for instance. It's not just paper; it's a stack of unmade decisions, potential bills, and forgotten appointments. I found that having a dedicated spot for 'action' mail and 'file' mail, dealt with immediately, dramatically reduced that daily sense of dread. No more digging through a mountain of envelopes! Then there's 'laundry left out.' Oh, the never-ending mountain! I realized that seeing clothes draped over chairs or in baskets constantly reminded me of an unfinished chore. Now, I try to have a designated laundry day and make putting clothes away a priority right after they're dry. It makes such a difference to have clear spaces. Similarly, 'shoes on the floor' by the entryway used to be a tripping hazard and just looked messy. A simple shoe rack or basket by the door made a world of difference. It's all about giving those 'items without a home' a proper place to live. 'Messy surfaces' and 'crowded nightstands' were big ones for me too. My nightstand used to be a graveyard of books, chargers, and forgotten water glasses. Now, I try to keep it to just three essential items: my lamp, a glass of water, and whatever book I'm currently reading. It creates such a calming atmosphere right before bed. And don't even get me started on 'cords & wires'! That spaghetti monster behind the TV was a constant source of low-level anxiety. Simple cable ties or a cable management box transformed that area from chaotic to calm. Even things like 'dishes in the sink' can add to that pervasive 'visual clutter stress'. I started a habit of washing dishes immediately after using them, or at least loading them into the dishwasher. It prevents that overwhelming sight of a full sink after dinner. And when I had 'toys everywhere' when my nieces and nephews visited, I learned to have designated bins for them, so cleanup became a fun game, not a chore. It's not about being a minimalist perfectionist, but about being intentional with what you keep and where it lives. Decluttering isn't just about throwing things away; it's about creating systems that support your peace of mind. Those 'crowded bookshelves' or cabinets can feel overwhelming, but tackling them one shelf at a time makes it manageable. I've found that breaking it down into smaller tasks, like "today I'll tackle the bags" (travel bags, plastic bags, gift bags – they all add up!) or "this weekend, I'll organize the pantry floor," makes the whole process less daunting. Every little bit truly helps to transform your space and your state of mind. What's one thing you're ready to clear out this week?

I love that you posted this; I’m autistic and I’m overly sensitive to visual clutter; I also have ADHD and didn’t feel the motivation to clean up visual clutter. Knowing that I’m not alone in dealing with visual clutter makes me feel like I can find ways to reduce it. Thank you, Iri!
