My least favorite day 🫤
Okay, so we all know natural hair wash day can feel like a full-blown marathon, right? For me, it truly is 'My Least Favorite Day' sometimes! But over time, I've picked up a few tricks that don't magically make it my favorite day, but definitely make it more manageable and less of a dread-fest. If you're tired of wash day woes, here’s how I try to conquer mine and maybe you can too! First things first: Preparation is EVERYTHING. Don't just jump in the shower. I like to start with a good pre-poo treatment. This could be anything from a simple oil (like coconut or olive oil) to a specific pre-shampoo conditioner. It helps to loosen up any tangles and adds a protective layer, making detangling much easier down the line. I leave it on for at least 30 minutes, sometimes even an hour if I have time. Next up, detangling in sections. This is non-negotiable for me, especially with natural hair! I divide my hair into 4-6 sections, clip them, and work on one section at a time. Using a wide-tooth comb or even just my fingers, I gently detangle from ends to roots *while the pre-poo is still in*. This prevents breakage and reduces the dread of post-shampoo knots. When it comes to shampooing, I focus on my scalp. A gentle, sulfate-free shampoo is my go-to. I apply it directly to my scalp and massage it in, letting the suds run down the length of my hair as I rinse. I avoid scrubbing the ends vigorously, as that can cause more tangles. Sometimes, if I've used a lot of product, I'll do a clarifying wash, but not every time. And yes, I'm always checking the bottle for that perfect 355 ml (or similar!) size that lasts me a while! Deep conditioning is where the magic happens for natural hair! After rinsing out the shampoo, I apply a generous amount of deep conditioner to each section, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. I make sure to distribute it evenly and then twist or braid each section. I usually cover my hair with a plastic cap and let it sit for 20-30 minutes, sometimes under a hooded dryer for extra penetration. This step makes my hair so much softer and easier to manage for the rest of the week. Finally, styling prep. Once I've rinsed out my deep conditioner with cool water (to seal the cuticles), I apply my leave-in conditioner and moisturizer to each section while my hair is still soaking wet. This locks in moisture and makes styling so much smoother. I often follow up with an oil to seal everything in. It’s still a process, and some days are definitely tougher than others, but having this routine makes my 'least favorite day' a lot less intimidating. What are your go-to wash day tips?
