considering cosmetology school?
Just some things to know before starting out! 🩷
So, you're considering cosmetology school? It's a huge step towards a rewarding and creative career, and let me tell you, it's much more than just learning how to cut hair. It’s about building an advanced, specialized skill that truly opens doors to a vibrant professional life. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and nerves, just like you might be now, wondering what the journey would actually be like. One of the first things you’ll quickly realize is that cosmetology school is HOURS based. Forget your typical summer or spring breaks from traditional schooling; your license hours depend on your state, and accumulating them takes serious dedication. Trust me, caffeine WILL become necessary to function! There will be early mornings and late nights, but every hour you put in is an investment in your future. It's during these intensive hours that you truly begin to learn an advanced, specialized skill in hairstyling, understanding not just techniques but also the science behind hair, which is crucial for teaching clients about hair care and styling techniques for their lifestyle. A big reality check for me was understanding that you don't earn $$$ for services (other than tips) as a student. While you're honing your craft, clients often tip, which is a huge help, but don't expect a regular paycheck. This teaches you early on the value of excellent customer service and building a loyal clientele – skills crucial for your established career later on. It’s all part of the cosmetology school tips you pick up along the way, preparing you for the real world. It’s so easy to compare yourself to others, especially when you see incredible work online. My best advice: Be realistic. starting out, it's easy to look at other's work and judge your own- best advice: DONT!!!! You are learning a brand new skillset, and it takes time. Don't be hard on yourself; it will come. Every single stylist, no matter how talented, started exactly where you are. Focus on mastering those cosmetology tips and techniques at your own pace. What’s truly amazing about this field is that there are TONS of options for extra education! Once you graduate and get licensed, your learning doesn't stop. Specializing in modern, trendiest hairstyles, advanced color techniques, extensions, or even bridal hair can significantly boost your career prospects. This continuous learning is precisely how you maintain an advanced, specialized skill set and become an expert, making you indispensable. It's truly about growing into an advanced, specialized skill expert, always evolving with the industry. I won't lie, there will be days you want to quit. I certainly had them, wiping my forehead after a tough day, wondering if I made the right choice. But push thru them. i promise it's worth it (it's okay to cry). Those moments of doubt are just part of the journey. Looking back, I realized the most important thing is to enjoy the journey <3. Celebrate your small victories, cherish the connections you make with clients and classmates, and always remember why you started. It's a challenging but ultimately incredibly rewarding path that allows you to transform lives and express your creativity every single day.
