Work is consuming my social life
I have tons of clothing content to share as I’m doing hauls for my YouTube channel and I will be posting some things pretty soon..
All work and no balance lately
It's a feeling so many of us know, isn't it? That nagging sense that work isn't just a part of your life, but it is your life. For me, lately, it truly feels like all work and no balance. My original post touched on it, but I really wanted to dive deeper because I know I'm not alone in this struggle of balancing work and social life. It started subtly, a few extra hours here, checking emails on a Saturday there. Now, it feels like my entire social calendar has been replaced by deadlines and 'in between meetings' moments. I used to love catching up with friends for brunch or planning weekend hikes, but recently, those plans get pushed aside for urgent tasks or simply because I’m too mentally drained. My WhatsApp groups are full of messages I haven't had the energy to respond to, and my clothing haul content for YouTube, which I love creating, keeps getting delayed because my free time just vanished! This constant work-life imbalance isn't just about missing out on fun; it’s affecting my well-being. I feel disconnected, sometimes even lonely, despite being surrounded by colleagues all day. It’s a vicious cycle: the more consumed I am by work, the less energy I have for my social life, and the more isolated I feel. So, what am I trying to do about it? Because just complaining won't change anything, right? I've been experimenting with a few strategies to try and reclaim my social life and find that crucial work and social life balance: Setting Clear Boundaries: This is harder than it sounds! I’m trying to set a firm "off-the-clock" time. Unless it's a genuine emergency, emails and work messages wait until the next workday. It's a mental shift, reminding myself that my time outside of work is sacred. Scheduling Social Time: Just like I schedule meetings, I'm now actively scheduling social activities. Whether it's a coffee date with a friend or simply an hour dedicated to scrolling through Lemon8 and connecting with you all, putting it on my calendar makes it feel more legitimate and less likely to be skipped. Prioritizing & Saying No: I've had to learn to say no to extra tasks at work that aren't truly essential or that I realistically don't have time for. And on the social front, I'm prioritizing quality interactions. Instead of feeling guilty about not making every single event, I focus on a few meaningful ones. It's about conscious choices. Leveraging Small Moments: Even though I might be 'in between meetings' for most of the day, I'm trying to use those few minutes wisely. A quick text to a friend, planning a dinner, or even just listening to a podcast during my commute can make me feel more connected and less overwhelmed. Communicating with My Support System: I've talked to my close friends about what's going on. They understand that I might not be as available, but knowing they're there and that I can reach out has been a huge comfort. Finding the perfect social work life balance is an ongoing journey, not a destination. Some weeks will be better than others, and I'm learning to be okay with that. The key, I'm realizing, is consistent effort and self-compassion. If you're going through something similar, remember you're not alone.
