Catfish on the loose

Hi, I'm Thalya. An ex musically star. I used to post family videos, dancing videos, my whole personality online. I also had a cyberbullying page with girls from all over the globe that could relate. I was bullied myself for wanting an online precense. this stemed from not getting attention at home & as a latina girl.. not being let out the house. 🙃

I've recently stopped posting myself, my life, and especially my son because someone has been using my pictures to catfish others for the past 10 years. Everytime I have friends and family report the page, Facebook sends back a message saying "this profile doesn't go against our guidelines" and shuts me down.

I drew the line when someone sent me a screenshot of the account trying to meet up with them and their kids. Mind you, they are using my son's pictures. I literally fear for the safety of myself and others online. You really never know who is on the other side of the screen. This is why I opted in for Lemon 8. You can be so real on here. 🥺🫶🏻

And also.. screw you catfish. I want my life back.

The experience of being impersonated online for over 10 years, as this story reveals, highlights the significant shortcomings in social media platforms’ ability to protect victims. Despite repeated reports from friends and family, Facebook’s refusal to remove the fraudulent profiles reflects larger challenges in enforcing community guidelines and safeguarding users. Victims of catfishing often endure isolation as their online identities are exploited without consent, causing distrust in digital interactions. For parents, the stakes are even higher when children’s photographs are used, increasing fears for their physical safety. This situation underscores the urgent need for more robust verification and reporting mechanisms on social platforms, empowering users to reclaim control over their digital presence. Switching to a platform like Lemon8 illustrates a growing desire for spaces that prioritize authenticity and personal safety, allowing users to share their true selves without fear of exploitation. Community-driven platforms with stringent security features may help mitigate risks associated with identity theft and impersonation. For anyone facing similar issues, it is vital to document instances of impersonation and continue to report them consistently, while also seeking support from trusted networks. Embracing platforms that facilitate genuine connections can help rebuild confidence in online sharing, promoting mental well-being and personal security in today’s complex digital landscape.
