Let’s talk about GLP-1 smell aversions 🍋

One thing no one warned me about when starting a GLP-1 was how intense smell aversion could get. Today, I sprayed on my favorite perfume—the one I’ve worn daily for years—and I immediately felt nauseous. I had to scrub it off because the scent was just too overpowering.

GLP-1 medications like tirzepatide and semaglutide don’t just affect your appetite they slow down digestion and increase sensitivity to certain stimuli, especially smells. It’s wild how your body starts rejecting things it used to tolerate (or even love).

Smells I used to enjoy like perfume, candles, or even fresh-cooked meals can now trigger nausea or make me lose my appetite completely. For anyone starting their GLP-1 journey: this is normal, and you’re not alone. Adjusting to your body’s new reactions is part of the process. Be gentle with yourself and take it day by day.

... Read moreI totally get it – the moment you realize your once-beloved scents are now your arch-nemesis feels incredibly isolating. When I first started my GLP-1 journey, I was prepared for changes in appetite, maybe even a bit of nausea, but GLP-1 smell aversion is no joke. It hit me like a ton of bricks, turning my daily routines upside down. It’s not just perfume; suddenly, the aroma of my morning coffee, the smell of cooked onions, or even certain cleaning products became unbearable. It felt like my nose had been upgraded to a super-sensitive detector, and not in a good way! This heightened sensitivity, especially to smells, is a phenomenon many of us on medications like Mounjaro, Wegovy, Semaglutide, Zepbound, or Tirzepatide experience. It's often linked to the slower digestion these medications cause, which can lead to a general increase in sensory perception. Your brain starts registering smells differently, sometimes even categorizing formerly pleasant ones as repulsive. It’s a wild ride, and understanding why it's happening can sometimes make it a tiny bit easier to cope with. So, what can you do when your world suddenly smells... off? Through trial and error, I’ve found a few strategies that have helped me navigate this strange side effect. First, embrace unscented everything. I've swapped out my scented lotions, detergents, and even cleaning sprays for fragrance-free alternatives. It's amazing how much difference it makes when your environment isn't constantly assaulting your senses. Second, become a master of ventilation. Cooking used to be a joy, but now certain food smells can send me running for fresh air. I make sure to open windows, use exhaust fans, and sometimes even cook simpler, less aromatic meals. If you're dealing with strong food odors, try preparing lighter dishes or opting for cold meals more often. For me, things like fresh salads or plain grilled chicken are much easier to tolerate than, say, a simmering stew or anything fried. Third, identify and avoid your personal triggers. Keep a mental note (or even a physical one!) of what smells consistently bother you. For some, it's floral scents; for others, it's specific food groups or chemicals. Once you know your triggers, you can actively minimize exposure. I even started carrying a small bottle of a mild, soothing essential oil (like peppermint, very lightly applied to a tissue, not directly inhaled) in my bag, just in case I encounter an unavoidable strong odor when I'm out and about. It's a small trick, but sometimes a quick, pleasant distraction can help reset your senses. Finally, remember that you're not alone in this. While it can be frustrating and sometimes even embarrassing, this is a legitimate side effect of GLP-1 medications. Be patient with your body and give yourself grace. If the smell aversion is severely impacting your ability to eat, leading to significant weight loss (beyond the intended effects), or causing extreme distress, it's always a good idea to chat with your doctor or healthcare provider. They might have additional insights or be able to suggest adjustments. This journey is full of unexpected twists, but we learn to adapt, one unscented product and open window at a time!
