Misogyny’s Biggest Lie: Calling Control Protection
Misogyny is rarely as simple as openly hating women. More often, it shows up as discomfort when women refuse to stay small, silent, obedient, or dependent. For centuries, women were expected to accept limitations placed on them by others. Now that women are claiming their voices, autonomy, leadership, and power, some mistake equality for oppression. Real equality doesn’t take rights away from anyone—it simply ends the privilege of controlling others.

From my personal experience, understanding misogyny as more than just hatred helped me recognize how deeply control is woven into some social and cultural dynamics. It’s not always overt hostility that holds women down, but the subtle pressure to conform—to stay quiet, small, or dependent. This control often hides behind claims of protection, tradition, or moral duty, which in reality serve to keep women from stepping into leadership or autonomy. I’ve seen countless women struggle to break free from these invisible chains, encountering resistance framed as concern or care. Misogyny’s clever disguise is in presenting control as protection or a necessary boundary, which confuses those affected and even bystanders. The realization that true equality doesn’t limit anyone’s rights but instead removes the privilege to dominate was empowering. In discussions and communities focused on feminism and women’s rights, we explore how this narrative needs unpacking. It’s empowering to witness and participate in conversations that challenge patriarchal structures head-on, advocating for full autonomy and accountability. In practical terms, shedding light on this form of misogyny inspires active resistance against toxic behaviors that enforce outdated roles. It’s important to question traditions that restrict women’s voices and leadership opportunities under the guise of protecting them. When we recognize the difference between care and control, we can better support women in claiming their rightful place in society. Joining movements like #WomenEmpoweringWomen and #SmashThePatriarchy fosters solidarity and collective action. Real liberation happens through awareness, shared experiences, and challenging the status quo, ensuring that no one’s rights are sacrificed for another’s desire to control.
