Not all men, but definitely always a man....

I'm a trans man (meaning I was born with the body of a female). When I was a kid, a week after I turned 18, I was hanging out at the little country store just down the road from my parent's house. I was there alone, using their free public wifi to check my social media and download some cartoons to watch on my PSP. My mom's old ass 80 year old friend (who owned the store) made some out of pocket comment about me being a lesbian, then put his arm around me, grabbed my boob and squeezed, and told me how he always thought I was sexy. I was too scared to move or swat him away. I left and walked home right after, feeling icky, like I must've done something awful to deserve being sexually assaulted. Despite my shame, I immediately told my mom about what happened. As soon as I finished telling her, she jumped in her car and drove over there, and beat the brakes off of him so bad he wound up in the hospital and never bothered either of us again.

... Read moreSexual assault is a pervasive issue that affects individuals of all genders, including transgender men. This story exemplifies the unique vulnerabilities trans individuals may face due to misunderstandings and social prejudices. It underscores the importance of speaking out about assault despite feelings of shame or fear, which is a common emotional response among survivors. Supportive responses from loved ones can be crucial in helping survivors reclaim their sense of safety and dignity. In this case, the immediate protective action taken by the survivor's mother not only prevented further harm but also demonstrated the power of advocacy within families. Such support systems significantly contribute to a survivor’s recovery process and emotional resilience. Public awareness about sexual violence against transgender people remains limited, but it is essential to recognize and affirm their experiences to foster inclusivity, safety, and justice. Resources tailored to trans survivors are increasingly available and include counseling services, crisis hotlines, and community support groups. Moreover, addressing sexual violence requires both societal education on respect and consent, and strict legal repercussions for offenders. Survivors are encouraged to report incidents and seek professional help for trauma recovery. This narrative challenges societal stigmas and emphasizes that abuse can happen to anyone – reinforcing the need for a compassionate, informed, and proactive approach in combating sexual violence.
