Back to hetero normativity I guess
As Pride Month concludes, many of us experience a bittersweet feeling. While the vibrant celebrations and open expressions of identity offer a sense of community and affirmation, returning to everyday life can feel like fading back into the dominant heteronormative culture. The humorous yet poignant OCR phrase "Guys pride month is over... guess we can't be gay anymore" captures that sense of invisibility some members of the LGBTQ+ community feel once the spotlight dims. In my personal experience, maintaining visibility and pride year-round is essential. Being open about one's identity in daily life helps combat the isolation that can come from societal norms expecting conformity to heteronormativity. Yet, the pressure to 'go back' to typical gender and sexual norms after Pride can create internal conflict. Engaging with smaller, everyday acts of self-expression—whether through conversations, supportive social circles, or sharing stories—can sustain the spirit of Pride beyond June. Supporting LGBTQ+ content creators, advocating for inclusive policies, and simply educating those around us are meaningful ways to continue fostering acceptance. Moreover, hashtags like #lgbt and #wlw remind us that communities thrive online, providing ongoing platforms to connect, share experiences, and celebrate diversity regardless of the calendar month. For anyone feeling like their identity is less visible outside of Pride, remember that your experience and presence matter every day, and embracing authenticity builds a more inclusive future for all.
