For the Fabric Snobs Who Scoff at Polyester 🪻
👀Does the sustainable maximalist style community exist on Lemon8? As much as I love an aesthetic look, there’s no way I can overlook it being made of plastic!

Just a preview of what polyester is really doing to our style, bodies, and planet 🥲

Hey fellow fabric enthusiasts! I wanted to dive a bit deeper into my journey of becoming a true 'fabric snob' and why I've come to believe that, honestly, Polyester is for Losers when it comes to prioritizing our health and the planet. For years, I just bought clothes based on how they looked, not really thinking about what they were made of. But I started noticing things – that weird, clammy feeling even when it wasn't hot, and sometimes, a subtle skin irritation that I couldn't quite pinpoint. That’s when I began asking myself, does polyester cause itching? And my research opened my eyes to a whole new world. It turns out, those seemingly innocent polyester garments are often a toxic ex to our bodies and the environment. I learned that polyester is essentially plastic, and during its production, it's often processed with toxic chemicals, including things like BPAs and PFAS which can leach into our skin. Hearing that synthetic clothing with BPAs and PFAS incrementally poisons bodies was a huge wake-up call for me. It really made me reconsider everything, from my favorite fast fashion finds to even practical items like, are 100 polyester blankets bad for you? The thought of sleeping under something that could be off-gassing chemicals just made me uncomfortable. Beyond the immediate health concerns, the environmental impact of fast fashion polyester is just heartbreaking. It literally chokes the planet. Polyester doesn't biodegrade, meaning every single polyester item ever made is still out there, contributing to landfills and microplastic pollution. It’s a cheap imitation of natural fibers that might save us a few bucks upfront but costs us so much more in the long run. Plus, let's be real, polyester holds odors like nobody's business, which definitely dulls personal style when you’re constantly wondering if you smell a bit off! So, how do we say no to polyester? It starts with being mindful consumers. I've been exploring Pathways to Sustainability and embracing a Soil to Skin: Planet Forward Action mindset. This means checking labels religiously – if it's 100% polyester, I usually pass. I look for natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, hemp, Tencel, and even responsibly sourced wool. It’s not just about the fibers, but also thinking about circular fashion practices, like buying secondhand, repairing clothes, and making sure my garments have a longer life cycle. Ultimately, for me, Wellness is Holistic. What we put on our skin is just as important as what we put in our bodies. Making these conscious fabric choices has not only improved my skin comfort but also given me peace of mind, knowing I'm contributing to a healthier planet. It feels good to align my Style Signatures with my values. It's a journey, not a destination, but every little step away from polyester and towards natural, sustainable choices makes a difference.
