book review: the girls by emma cline

this book has been on my TBR since high school - seriously i always wanted to read it since it came out in 2016 but i just never got around to it. i didnt read much throughout my first few years of college since i didnt have time. i didnt get back into reading until i was working at the barnes and noble cafe and i learned to fall in love with books and reading, and now, 3 years later i finally read one of my longest to be reads.

honestly, i really liked this book. i love learning about and viewing media about cults so this was totally up my ally. i also love that it was set in the 60s. it was based off the manson murders and followed one of the girls who was kind of in the background during fat whole time. its not a non fiction book and follows a slightly changed story. i thought emma cline was able to really write the imagery well and i could totally see each of the girls in my head. i think it would be a really fun summer read and would recommend it to anyone who likes cults and dark fiction. there are some sexual parts in the book as well, mostly not great scenes if you know what i mean so potential trigger warning for that but theyre not too terrible and not too detailed. i wont give too many spoilers but if you know about the manson family you will know what happens so its a bit predictable in that sense. but im glad i finally got to read it and definitely recommend it :)

... Read moreBeyond the initial rush of finishing 'The Girls,' I've found myself continually pondering Emma Cline’s masterful storytelling and the profound mental landscape she crafts. It's more than just a historical fiction; it's a deep dive into vulnerability and the insidious appeal of belonging, especially when you're young and searching for your place in the world. This is why it became a New York Times bestseller – it taps into something universally human yet tragically dark. What truly struck me about Cline's writing, and why it resonated so deeply, is her ability to evoke a palpable sense of unease and fear without resorting to cheap thrills. The 4.5/5 rating isn't just for the captivating plot; it’s for how she makes you feel what Evie feels – that simmering anxiety, the desperate need for acceptance, and the chilling realization of where that path can lead. Reading it on my Kindle, often late at night, frequently left me with a lingering sense of psychological dread. This wasn't from gore or jump scares, but from the unsettling yet realistic portrayal of human dynamics and the quiet manipulation that can unravel a person. The novel’s exploration of the girls' psychological states within the Manson-esque cult is incredibly nuanced. It really makes you think about how easily young, impressionable minds can be swayed, how the desire to be seen and loved can blind you to imminent danger. You witness the slow erosion of individual thought, replaced by a collective consciousness, and it's genuinely unnerving to observe. Cline doesn't paint them as one-dimensional villains; instead, she delves into the complex motivations and vulnerabilities that lead them down such a destructive path. It's a chilling reminder that the line between seeking connection and falling into dangerous control can be incredibly thin. This psychological depth is where the 'mental' aspect of the book truly shines, making you question societal structures and personal autonomy. For anyone who loves diving deep into character psychology, particularly in a book club setting like what 'bookworm bitches' might discuss, 'The Girls' offers so much. We could talk for hours about Evie's passive choices, the magnetic yet toxic dynamics between the girls, and how the turbulent 60s backdrop amplified their collective search for identity and purpose. It truly makes you wonder, what are some people truly waiting for? That elusive sense of belonging, that promise of a meaningful purpose, can sometimes lead us down incredibly unexpected and terrifying paths, especially when charismatic figures are involved. The way Cline portrays this anticipation and subsequent disillusionment is masterful. Emma Cline doesn't just tell a story; she draws you into a world where innocence and corruption intertwine, leaving you to grapple with the complexities of human nature long after the last page. If you appreciate a book that stays with you, challenging your perception of fear, loyalty, and the intricate workings of the human mind, this is absolutely one to pick up. It's a testament to how powerful and affecting a well-told story can be, and why its themes continue to resonate today. It’s definitely a book that sparks discussions and makes you reflect.
