Hey everyone! I've been completely obsessed with making my sketchbook a truly personal, lived-in space lately, and I wanted to share some of my go-to ideas for achieving that wonderfully 'chunky' and 'messy' look. Forget pristine, perfect pages – sometimes the most authentic art comes from embracing imperfection and just letting loose! One of my favorite ways to start is by simply drawing shapes & outlines. It sounds basic, but it's incredibly meditative and a fantastic way to fill a page without pressure. I love experimenting with flowers, moon & stars, or just abstract forms. You can use different colored pens or even just a pencil to build up layers. This instantly gives your pages a fuller, more 'chunky' feel. Another thing I always recommend is to practice random Pinterest sketches. Seriously, scroll through Pinterest for a few minutes, find something that catches your eye – maybe an interesting pose, a simple object, or a cool pattern – and just try to replicate it quickly. Don’t worry about perfection; the goal is to get the lines down and enjoy the process. These quick studies really add character and variety to your sketchbook. I often find myself doing quick outline art of flowers because they’re just so satisfying to draw! And for those days when you feel a bit uninspired, remember that a little messy but the vibes are there is totally okay! Some of my favorite pages are the ones where I just let things happen. This could mean drawing silly worms or just doing some blob outlines & patterns. I've been really into experimenting with mandalas lately, using different blue ink pens to create intricate but forgiving designs. It's all about the process, not just the final product. Don't underestimate the power of collage and mixed media. I keep a place for stickers in my sketchbook – whether they’re from books, old packaging, or just random ones I've collected. Layering stickers with drawings, notes, or even snippets of text makes the page incredibly rich and visually interesting. It truly helps make your sketchbook feel 'chunky' and unique to your journey. Lastly, don't forget the power of just doodling! I often find myself doing doodles from when I was watching a show. Zentangles & patterns are also fantastic for filling space and creating a sense of busy, creative energy. Whether you're a 'star girly' or an 'earthy flower cottagecore girly,' let your sketchbook reflect your personal aesthetic. Combine stars, flowers, and outlines – anything goes! The beauty of a chunky, messy sketchbook is that it's a true reflection of your creative flow, with no rules or judgment. Just keep creating and filling those pages!
