A DAY IN THE LIFE OF MY PET - new litter box

When I first brought home Daisy's new Litter-Robot, I admit I was a little nervous about how she'd take to such a significant change. Cats are creatures of habit, and introducing a new litter box, especially a high-tech one, can sometimes be a challenge. Why do cats sniff a new litter box or one in a new location so intently? It's their primary way of gathering information about their environment. Their sense of smell is incredibly powerful, and they use it to identify familiar scents, pheromones, and potential threats or comforts. A new litter box, even if it's an upgrade, is a foreign object that needs to be thoroughly vetted by their sensitive noses. They're checking for safety, familiarity, and trying to understand what this new item means for their routine. Based on my experience and what I've learned, here are a few tips for introducing a new litter box, whether it’s a standard box or an 'upgraded my litter box' marvel like the Litter-Robot, especially if you're placing it in a new location: Go Gradual (if possible): If you're replacing an old box, try placing the new one next to the old one for a few days. Once your cat is comfortably using the new box, you can remove the old one. If you're moving a litter box to a completely new spot, consider moving the old box closer to the new location gradually over a few days, or simply place the new box in the new spot and keep the old one in its original place for a bit, giving your cat options. Scent Transfer is Key: Don't clean the old litter box out completely before the transition. Take a small amount of soiled litter from the old box and put it into the new one. This familiar scent can be incredibly reassuring to your cat, signaling that this new box is indeed its toilet. It acts like a little beacon of familiarity. Positive Reinforcement: When your cat approaches, sniffs, or especially uses the new litter box, offer praise, a gentle pet, or even a small treat. This helps create a positive association with the new setup and encourages them to explore and use it. Avoid Strong Scents: Cats are very sensitive to smells. Avoid using strong-smelling cleaners or heavily scented litter in the new box initially, as this can deter them. Their noses are much more powerful than ours, and what smells pleasant to us might be overwhelming to them. Placement Matters: Ensure the new location is quiet, private, and easily accessible. Cats value privacy when doing their business. Avoid high-traffic areas or places directly next to their food and water bowls, as they generally prefer separation for these activities. Consider Multiple Boxes: If you have multiple cats or a very large home, or if you're struggling with a new location, having more than one litter box (the general rule is one per cat plus one extra) can ease the transition and reduce stress.
