5 Money Habits That Actually Work

1️⃣ Automate your savings

If you don’t see it, you won’t miss it. Round ups count & add up when money is too tight to put away a set, larger amount.

2️⃣ Track your spending

to see patterns and make better choices.

The Empower app is great for this.

3️⃣ Use cash wisely

Cards for bills. Cash for fun.

When I’m going to a street fair, festival or amusement venue I decide how much I can spend and bring cash so I don’t have to worry about overspending.

4️⃣ Avoid impulse buys.

5️⃣ Plan for the future

It doesn’t have to be a perfect, just the next step in the right direction.

... Read moreHey everyone! 👋 You know, when I first started trying to get a handle on my finances, it felt overwhelming. I was constantly searching for 'saving money habits' and 'budgeting habits' that actually made a difference. After a lot of trial and error, I discovered these 5 money habits that actually work for real people like us. If you're new to this, these are fantastic 'financial habits for beginners' to kickstart your journey! 1️⃣ Automate Your Savings This is probably my favorite tip and truly a key thing to do when saving. Setting up to 'Automate Savings' was a game-changer. I used to think I needed a huge chunk of money, but even small, consistent transfers add up incredibly fast. I set up a direct deposit from my paycheck to automatically funnel a small percentage into a separate high-yield savings account before I even see it. Out of sight, out of mind! You can also use apps to round up your purchases to the nearest dollar – it's like a tiny, painless savings superpower. This makes building an emergency fund or saving for a big goal so much easier without feeling deprived. 2️⃣ Track Your Spending Before I started tracking, I honestly had no idea where all my money went. It felt like I was 'spending all your money' without anything to show for it! This habit is essential for seeing patterns and making better choices. I personally use a simple spreadsheet, but there are tons of great apps out there (like the Empower app mentioned earlier) that can categorize your spending automatically. By knowing exactly where every dollar goes, I can identify areas where I can cut back without feeling like I'm sacrificing. It's not about restriction, it's about awareness and control, helping you truly 'Track Spending' effectively. 3️⃣ Use Cash Wisely This was a big one for me, especially for those 'fun' expenses. I found that swiping a card made it too easy to overspend. My personal rule is: cards for bills, cash for fun. For things like going to a street fair, a festival, or even just a night out with friends, I decide on a budget beforehand and only bring that amount in cash. Once it's gone, it's gone! This simple trick literally stopped me from 'spending all your money' on impulse purchases in the moment and really helped me 'Use Cash Wisely' to stick to my budget for entertainment. 4️⃣ Avoid Impulse Buys Oh, the impulse buy! We've all been there. This is where patience truly becomes a virtue. I've developed a '24-hour rule' for anything non-essential. If I see something I think I need, I add it to a wishlist and wait a day. More often than not, the urge passes, or I realize I don't actually need it. Unsubscribing from marketing emails from stores I frequent also helped reduce temptation. This habit to 'Avoid Impulse Buys' directly contributes to a 'small savings habit' because those little unplanned purchases really add up over time. 5️⃣ Plan for the Future Finally, 'Plan for the Future' doesn't mean you need a perfect, 30-year financial plan today. It just means taking the next step in the right direction. For me, that started with setting clear, achievable financial goals. Maybe it's saving for a down payment, a vacation, or simply building a robust emergency fund. I regularly review my progress and adjust my 'money habit' strategy as needed. Even small steps, like setting up a recurring transfer to a retirement account, can have a huge impact over time. Remember, consistency is key to all these 'financial habits'!
