Heart Of A Goon Book Review

*Spoiler Alert* ‼️🚨

I See Me… Over and Over Again

I see me: in Zoya, on so many levels. The girl moving through life with high-functioning depression and anxiety, still showing up for everybody but herself. I see me: giving solid advice I never seem to take, not realizing I’m unraveling until I’m already spiraling. I see me: crying because—for once—I felt truly seen.

I see me: the younger sibling who gets labeled “too sensitive” for expressing hurt, for speaking up when something doesn’t feel right. I see me: learning to bottle things up, building walls higher than I meant to. I see me: a father not deceased, but absent enough to create trust issues… and a self-sabotaging streak that wars with the part of me that knows I deserve a rare kind of love. Still questioning my worth anyway.

I see me: always having to be the “big dawg,” the strong one, the blunt one—never given space to just be a soft, girly girl. I see me: craving a love that sees me, chooses me, protects me, and helps knock down the walls brick by brick. Wanting my soft-girl era in full.

I see me in Goon too: having a cousin I loved deeply who battled addiction, trying to save them, trying to protect them, feeling shattered when I couldn’t. That savior complex is real.

And I’m happy Goon saw Zoya the way she needed to be seen—reassuring her, loving her, protecting her. Even when he wanted to walk away, he didn’t. He still showed up. That hit me in a place I didn’t expect.

10/10. I’m locked in for the rest of their journey. I can’t wait until B and Pri find out Zoy is pregnant—I know it’s about to shake the table.

40!!!! A wtf moment but also I wasn't surprised kind of suspected it.

Stevieeee please let her survive but I know what we already think of Menace its about to be 10x worse behind his wife.

Jah, thank you for writing for the gworls, for seeing us, and for reminding us that our Black men need grace and space to be vulnerable too. You have officially become one of my favorite authors. Love you down. Take your rest, and may everything you pour out return to you a hundredfold.

... Read moreSince finishing 'Heart of a Goon,' I've been reflecting so much on why this story resonated with me and countless others. It's more than just a romance; it's a journey into the heart of what it means to be vulnerable, to heal, and to find a love that truly nurtures. For me, Zoya's character felt incredibly real. Her struggle with high-functioning depression and anxiety, always showing up for others while falling apart internally, is something many of us, especially strong women, can see ourselves in. The author, Jah, masterfully portrays the quiet battles she fights, the walls built from past hurts like an absent father, and the self-sabotaging patterns that keep her from the love she deserves. It's a powerful reminder that even the “big dawgs” among us need space to be soft and loved. Then there's Goon. Beyond the tough exterior suggested by the title "Heart of a Goon" and the visual of a tattooed man, he embodies a rare kind of protective and understanding love. The way he sees Zoya, not just her strength but her fragility, and chooses to stand by her, even when it's hard, is truly inspiring. Many of us have felt that "savior complex" trying to fix others, but Goon turns that dynamic on its head by being the steadfast presence Zoya needs. Their dynamic, the "Goon & Zoya" connection, is about mutual growth and acceptance. It shows that true strength lies in vulnerability and allowing yourself to be loved. This book also bravely tackles broader themes relevant to #blackbooks and #urbanread genres. It gives much-needed grace and space for Black men to be vulnerable, highlighting that they too carry burdens and deserve understanding, challenging stereotypes. This narrative is so important right now. It's not just entertainment; it's a mirror reflecting our experiences and a window into the healing power of love within our communities. If you're looking for a book that will make you feel deeply, challenge your perceptions of strength, and celebrate authentic, healing love, then "Heart of a Goon" is definitely for you. It's a must-read for anyone who appreciates character-driven stories with emotional depth and a touch of urban grit. The ending left me on the edge of my seat, especially with the mention of Zoya's pregnancy – I'm eagerly anticipating 'Heart of a Goon 2' and can't wait to see what Jah has in store for Goon and Zoya's continuing journey. This story reminds us that everyone, no matter how strong they appear, deserves a love that sees them, chooses them, and helps them dismantle their walls, brick by brick. Trust me, you'll be locked in from page one!
