WHY IS IT SO HARD TO SAY THAT WE NEED HELP?

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO SAY THAT WE NEED HELP?

When someone asks you for help and you help them — how do you feel?

Good. Needed. Like your day has meaning. There's something quiet and warm about having been useful to another person. You don't do it out of obligation — you do it because it brings you joy.

Now turn the mirror around.

So why is it that when you need help, you stay silent? Why do you grit your teeth, handle it alone, swallow "I'm fine" — just to avoid asking?

Because you think you'll be a burden. That you'll be stealing someone's time. That you'll be too much.

But you just felt it yourself — helping isn't a burden. It's a joy.

When you don't ask for help, you're not sparing the other person discomfort. You're depriving them of the very same satisfaction you feel when you give. You're stealing their chance to feel needed. To be for you what you have so often been for them.

Asking for help isn't weakness. It's a gift — wrapped inside out.

And every time you hold it inside, someone is left without their gift.

🌿 Today's mantra: "When I ask for help, I give someone the joy of helping."

🪬 Talisman: One thing you need help with. Ask one person today. Not to receive — but to give them the very thing you know so well.

... Read moreIn my experience, learning to ask for help started as a challenging yet transformative journey. For years, I believed saying "I'm fine" was the easiest way to handle stress, not realizing it also shut out opportunities to connect and grow. What truly shifted my perspective was understanding that helping others brings them a sense of purpose and joy — the very feelings I experienced when offering aid. This realization helped me see that withholding a request for help doesn’t just isolate me, but also denies others a chance to contribute meaningfully. The fear of being a burden is deeply rooted in our culture's emphasis on self-reliance, but reframing help as a mutual exchange has been freeing. One practical step I recommend is starting small: identify one specific thing you need help with and ask one trusted person. This act not only alleviates your load but also fosters closeness and trust. Over time, regularly sharing our needs and accepting support nurtures resilience and a supportive network that benefits everyone involved. Remember, asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a courageous acknowledgment of our humanity. Embracing this can enrich your relationships and bring a warm sense of community, just as giving help did for you. Keep today's mantra in mind: "When I ask for help, I give someone the joy of helping." It may transform how you see both giving and receiving in profound ways.
