As an accountant working in public accounting, I don’t think younger me ever imagined how grateful I would feel for choosing accounting. This career has given me so much much more more than I expected - from the flexibility to work anywhere with just my laptop, to the financial freedom that lets me enjoy all my hobbies (including leasing, my first horse, which still doesn’t feel real).
I knew I picked the right path the first time I experienced things like unlimited PTO, work from home days, and even getting to travel for business. Going to New York City for work was a dream I had since college and this year I was actually able to go there for work. It was one of the proudest moments in my career.
What I love most is that this job keeps me growing. I had to learn quickly when I first started, and looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and all the experience I’ve gained. I remember my first busy season feeling difficult due to how much of a learning curve there is. I had known what busy season was, but I didn’t fully realize how much of a challenge it would be until I was in it. However, I quickly learned that problem-solving, working with amazing people, and filing a 10-K or 10-Q after weeks of effort – those moments make it all worth it.
