Working with clients as an accountant
As a first-year accountant, I definitely felt a little nervous the first few times I had to reach out to a client. Communicating with clients can feel intimidating at the beginning, but it’s completely normal. What helped me was remembering that everyone involved is just doing their job — and they genuinely want the audit to go smoothly too.
If I ever wasn’t confident about an email or question, I’d run it by my senior or manager first. Over time, communicating in a business environment starts to feel much more natural.

Starting out as an accountant can be challenging, especially when it comes to initiating contact with clients. It’s totally normal to feel nervous about reaching out, but understanding that everyone involved wants the process to run smoothly can ease this anxiety. Remember, your clients are professionals just like you, and they appreciate clear and thoughtful communication. One effective way to increase confidence is to prepare thoroughly before contacting a client. Draft your emails or questions carefully and, if possible, have a more experienced colleague review them. This not only improves the quality of your communication but also helps build your confidence gradually. When you first reach out, be concise and professional, ensuring your message clearly states your purpose and any specific information you need. Over time, as you gain more experience and positive interactions, connecting with clients will start to feel more natural and less intimidating. Additionally, using tools such as checklists or templates for common client communications can save time and ensure consistency. Don’t hesitate to ask for feedback from your seniors or managers to continuously improve your approach. Engaging with clients in this way not only helps you build strong professional relationships but also reflects well on your firm. It shows that you are proactive and attentive, qualities that clients highly value in their accountants. Lastly, embrace the learning curve and be patient with yourself. Effective client communication is a skill developed over time, and every conversation is a step forward in your professional growth.
