What they didn’t tell me about postpartum

And the first time I got pregnant I was 19 years old and very naïve to what pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum experience would entail.

And it was very scared of all of it.

I knew the only way to get through it was to move forwards, but in somewhat of a sense of denial, I did not research or do anything to prepare myself, especially for postpartum… and I think one of the biggest reasons is that honestly I had no idea what postpartum was going to entail. No one told me… so I just didn’t know.

I did a lot of things wrong during my postpartum experience the first time around. My main focus was losing weight… not focusing on my Health, or balancing my hormones.

My second post partum experience at 21 wasn’t much better although I did focus on more nutritious foods and getting to a holistic doctor to help balance my hormones and figure out what kind of supplements I needed to be taking.

I’m now 38 weeks pregnant with my third little boy and have taken such a different approach this time around.

Talking to other Mom ‘s that have been through the postpartum experience before, planning, had to get checked out and get my blood work done after baby, meal prepping and researching the most nutritious foods that will help my body recover after childbirth… to name a few of the things that I’ve been doing this time around!

One of the most significant aspects is experiencing hormonal shifts, often leading to what is known as the 'postpartum blues'. It's crucial to understand that these feelings are common and support is available. Educating yourself on nutrition is vital during this phase; nutrient-rich foods can help balance hormones and aid recovery. Engaging with healthcare professionals about your physical health post-birth is equally important, as they can guide you through the process of blood work and hormonal evaluations. Meal prepping and planning ahead can alleviate some stress, allowing you to focus on healing and caring for your baby. Consider seeking community support through groups for new mothers, as connecting with others who understand your struggles and experiences can be incredibly beneficial. Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all approach, so find what works for you and embrace the journey ahead with an open mind and heart.
