Losing a child is an indescribable experience that reshapes your entire world. Since November 14, 2025, when my son Dakota Beard passed away, each day has been a mixture of profound sadness and small steps toward healing. One thing that has helped me cope is focusing on creating a meaningful memorial that truly reflects who he was. While we are still waiting for Dakota's headstone, having the grave marked with his name and birth and death years brings a certain peace. The inscription "DAKOTA BEARD Giayeon, Kentucky 2025 1993" on the temporary marker connects us to his spirit and gives us a place to visit and remember. It’s a tangible way to honor his life and the memories he left behind. In this journey, I've learned that memorials don't have to be perfect or complete from the start. Grief moves in waves, and taking the time to thoughtfully choose how to commemorate your loved one can make the process more bearable. Sometimes, it’s okay to take it slow—to let yourself feel the pain and also find ways to celebrate the joy they brought to your life. I encourage anyone dealing with loss to reach out to support groups, talk about their feelings openly, and create personal rituals of remembrance. Whether it’s planting a tree, creating a photo album, or simply spending quiet moments at the grave site, these acts can help keep the connection alive. Through sharing this ongoing experience, I hope to provide comfort to others facing similar loss and remind them that while the pain never fully disappears, love and memory endure.
