When I was in school, this was always a hot topic in clinic discussions… 👀🦷
Do you floss before or after the prophy?
I still love hearing everyone’s reasoning and routine! ⬇️
When it comes to flossing in relation to your professional dental cleaning, or prophy, many dental hygienists have their personal routines and reasons. From my experience working alongside professionals and observing patient care, flossing before the prophy appointment often helps to remove food particles and plaque buildup, making the scaling and polishing process more effective. Patients come in with less debris, which can make a hygienist’s job smoother and the cleaning more thorough. On the other hand, some argue flossing after the prophy is beneficial because the teeth and gums are freshly cleaned, and flossing post-cleaning can help remove any residual plaque loosened during the cleaning. This can also reinforce good habits and ensure patients actively engage in daily oral care once they’ve been reminded of its importance. Personally, I recommend flossing before your dental cleaning, especially if your appointment includes a thorough scaling session. Doing so can maximize the productivity of your visit and help your hygienist target the areas that need attention. Additionally, if gum sensitivity or bleeding is an issue, flossing beforehand allows the hygienist to assess gum health more accurately and advise on proper techniques. Ultimately, consistency in flossing matters the most, regardless of timing. Whether you floss before or after your prophy, maintaining regular daily flossing is key to preventing gum disease and cavities between teeth. It's great to hear all the different routines because it highlights that oral care can be tailored to fit individual needs and preferences while keeping the goal of a healthy smile in focus.
