If you’re thinking about moving to LA…
Moving to LA has literally been one of the best decisions of my life. So here are 5 things that surprised me:
1. Dating is actually fun here!
I heard so many horror stories from unambiguous Black women about dating out here, but that hasn’t been my experience. There’s no shortage of fine, kind, and successful people, and it’s reflected in the dating pool imo. I also feel like I get approached here WAY more often.
2. Way easier to make friends than I thought it’d be
LA has a reputation as a “lonely city”, but that also hasn’t been my experience. I met a ton of friends through other people or by going out by myself, and it feels like a lot of people want to connect and build community (both transplants and LA natives). I’ve also built community by just being a regular at my favorite places.
3. The food is amazing!
Now… coming from Philly and Houston I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting much from the food here. I thought it would lack… seasoning lmao. But I’ve had amazing food out here and a variety of different cuisines I couldn’t get readily anywhere else. But you have to be willing to explore and not just go to places for the aesthetic.
4. Networking is WAY easier!
This is actually why I moved here in part, but I’m even surprised by how easy it is to meet people out here—especially other creatives. People want to connect and even collaborate, and you could be partying with someone that might change your life or take your craft to the next level.
5. Black nightlife is BOOMING!
This was something else I was worried about after coming from largely Black cities, but I actually love the nightlife out here. Tons of places to go if you know where to look, and Black LA is small enough to run into a lot of the same people from the parties you go to (which could be good or bad I guess lol). Overall though, I can always find something to do.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts. Let me know what you think of LA!
