How many of my mom friends were told to avoid fish during pregnancy? 👀

For a long time, pregnant women were told to stay away from fish.

And to be fair… that advice came from a real concern.

Mercury exposure (especially from certain fish) can impact a developing baby’s brain. Events like Minamata showed just how serious that risk can be.

So the message became:

🚫 “Avoid fish during pregnancy”

But here’s what got lost…

Fish is one of the richest sources of DHA and EPA , the exact fats a baby needs to build its brain, eyes, and nervous system.

DHA in particular is a major structural component of the brain.

Your baby literally pulls it from you during pregnancy.

So when fish intake dropped…

👉 DHA intake dropped too

And when researchers actually started measuring levels (not guessing), many pregnant women were found to have low omega-3 status.

That matters more than most people realize.

Because your cells , and your baby’s , are built from fats.

If the balance is off, it can affect:

• brain development

• inflammation

• how nutrients move in and out of cells

Today, the recommendation isn’t “avoid fish.”

It’s:

✔️ Choose low-mercury fatty fish

✔️ Get enough DHA

✔️ Support a healthy omega balance

Because this isn’t about fear.

It’s about giving your body , and your baby, the right building blocks.

And most people are still not getting enough.

I also learned that simply avoiding fish doesn't mean you're safe from nutrient deficiency. In fact, without enough DHA intake during pregnancy, both inflammation and nutrient transport in cells can be adversely affected, which might influence fetal development. To ensure I was getting enough without risking heavy metal exposure, I opted for a high-quality, purified fish oil supplement that is rigorously tested for heavy metals and oxidation. Testing my omega balance was eye-opening; it confirmed that many expectant moms might not meet the optimal levels without supplementation or smart dietary choices. Ultimately, it's not about fear but about smart choices—embracing fish that provide essential fatty acids while avoiding those high in mercury.
