Whatcha doin? Can play with that?

Oh, the classic cat-and-craft scenario! My tabby, Leo, is exactly the same. Every time I pull out my knitting needles and that gorgeous chunky blue yarn, suddenly I have a furry supervisor perched right where I can’t quite reach my project. It's almost as if he's asking, 'Whatcha doin'? Can I play with that?' with those big, inquisitive eyes. That very intense stare at the knitted item on the wooden table is so relatable! It’s not just knitting, either. Any time I get absorbed in a hobby – be it a new cross-stitch, assembling a puzzle, or even just writing in my journal – Leo has to investigate. The way he stares intently at the moving needles, or tries to bat at the dangling yarn, is both adorable and sometimes a little… disruptive! I think it's the movement, the texture of the yarn (especially those chunky knits!), and maybe just the sheer audacity that I'm paying attention to something other than him. That beautiful chunky blue knitted item you see in the picture must have been absolutely irresistible to that curious kitty. It reminds me of the time Leo tried to 'help' me untangle a huge skein of wool – it ended up in a bigger mess, but his intentions were pure, I'm sure! I've learned a few things over the years about managing my feline 'assistant.' First, distraction is key. Before I even get settled with my project, I make sure Leo has his own engaging toy. Sometimes it’s a crinkly ball, other times it's a puzzle feeder that keeps him occupied for a good 15-20 minutes. This gives me a head start before his curiosity fully kicks in. I've even found that giving him his own 'safe' yarn ball (made from pet-safe string or a tightly wound toy) can sometimes satisfy that urge to bat at my actual project. Another trick is creating a dedicated crafting zone where it’s slightly harder for them to interfere. For me, that means a spot on my desk or a corner of the couch where I can work with minimal cat interference. It’s not always foolproof, especially when they decide your lap is the best place for a nap right when you’re trying to work on a delicate stitch! I’ve also started using project bags that zip up completely. This is a lifesaver for keeping all my supplies, especially that tempting blue knitted item, secure when I step away even for a moment. You never know when a curious paw might decide to investigate further. And always, always, safety first! Yarn, needles, small beads, and other embellishments can be dangerous if ingested by our furry friends. I make sure to keep everything securely tucked away or out of reach when I'm not actively working on it. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind and knowing my little supervisor is safe. It’s really sweet, though, isn’t it? Their desire to be involved in everything we do. It’s their unique way of showing affection and curiosity. And honestly, a little furry companion watching over my work makes the whole process feel even more cozy and special.
