Acrylic markers for the first time

2025/5/30 Edited to

... Read moreOh my gosh, you guys! I finally took the plunge and tried acrylic markers for the very first time, and I have to say, it was an experience! If you've been curious about diving into the world of acrylic marker art, especially drawing with acrylic markers, then this is for you. I’m sharing everything I learned and my honest thoughts, hoping to save you some of the trial and error I went through. First off, let's talk about what these are and why they're so popular. Acrylic markers are essentially liquid acrylic paint in a pen format. This means they offer vibrant, opaque colors that dry quickly and are permanent once dry – a huge plus for mixed media or working on various surfaces beyond just paper, like canvas, wood, or even rocks! They’re fantastic for adding details to bigger paintings, creating bold line art, or even doing full illustrations. For beginners, they offer a less messy alternative to traditional tube acrylics and brushes, making them super approachable. Before you start drawing, there are a few things what you should know about using acrylic paint markers. My first tip, and this is crucial: shake them really well! I mean, until you hear that little ball rattling inside. This mixes the pigment properly. Then, you'll need to 'prime' the nib by pressing it down on a scrap piece of paper until the paint flows. Don't press too hard or too long, or you'll get a puddle! I learned that the hard way. When it comes to surfaces, I found they work beautifully on thicker paper or cardstock. If you’re into paint marker drawings, a smooth surface really helps the paint flow evenly. I also experimented with layering. Because they dry fast, you can layer colors on top of each other once the first layer is completely dry. Blending markers can be a bit tricky if you're not fast enough; you usually need to work quickly with wet-on-wet techniques or use specific blending mediums. For a first-timer like me, I focused more on clean lines and layering once dry. My initial attempt was just a simple doodle, trying to get a feel for the flow and opacity. What I loved is how vibrant the colors are, and the control you get is amazing compared to a brush for fine details. They really make acrylic markers drawing feel accessible. However, I did notice that some colors needed a second coat for full opacity, especially on darker backgrounds. And remember, unlike watercolors, once it's dry, it's pretty much set! So plan your layers. Overall, my first time using acrylic markers was really positive (hence my 8/10 rating!). They are incredibly fun and versatile. For anyone looking for the best acrylic markers for beginners, I'd say just grab a small set and experiment. They're a fantastic tool to add to your art supplies, whether you're drawing, painting, or just doodling. You don't need to be an expert to create cool things to paint with these – just an open mind and a willingness to explore! Give them a try, and let me know what you think!
