💈✂️ working with hair ✂️💈
I cut hair, for about 40 hours a week… there’s somethings you wouldn’t guess/wouldn’t think about it. So I made you a list ☺️
✂️schooling
I’m going to be honest, cosmetology school sucks. But it’s needed, schools are all different. The name and reputation of the school isn’t that important, I went to a well known company and I do think they went easier on me at my license test; my work bestie went to a different one and her experience was VERY different.
One thing I’d recommend checking is how much you get for the price, some schools seem like they’d be cheaper - but you have to get your own supplies which adds up quickly.
💈social media
I didn’t take this as seriously as I should’ve in school, your presence online (Instagram being a big one in my area) really matters. It gets you seen. Which draws in attention
✂️THE PRICE OF TOOLS?!?
They’re crazy expensive, it depends on the brand tho too. I invested and got good quality shears… it was a three pack and I paid $1,300… it’s that bad
💈hair will be everywhere
on your face, in your clothes, in your socks even. Eventually you get used to it and can ignore the itch. But always make time to dehair before after work plans
✂️how you look really does matter
there was an event in my family that really upset me, so makeup wasn’t important for a bit. However when I wore it and did something with my hair the next week my paycheck was $200 more (we get paid weekly too)
💈your clients
Word of mouth is huge!! People will come in and ask for you because their friend said something about you, then that person could talk too. But it’s up to you and how you act/perform that decides if it’s positive or negative.
You also never know what is happening in their life, good or bad. This girl came in getting a new cut because something exciting was happening and she needed a change, then I was talking while giving this guy a buzz and he mentioned that him and his daughter both got told they have cancer within two weeks of each other, you could tell it was majorly affecting him and it was hard for both of us. You’ll experience both sides and it can be hard. Like really hard
But over all I do enjoy the job! I’m a very chatty hands on person, so college isn’t a good fit. It’s very different and difficult, but I’m glad I did it🫶🏻
