Blue Jay and others at bird feeder
As a fellow backyard bird enthusiast, I'm so excited to share what I've learned from my own birdwatching adventures, especially with my awesome BIRD FEEDER CAM! It's been a game-changer for really understanding our feathered friends. If you're like me and dreaming of seeing those vibrant blue jays and striking cardinals gracing your yard, you've come to the right place. These beautiful birds bring so much life and color, and attracting them is easier than you might think! Decoding What Attracts Blue Jays: Blue jays are incredibly smart and have a few favorite treats. My biggest success has come from offering peanuts, both in the shell and shelled. They absolutely adore them! I usually put them on a platform feeder or scatter some on a tray feeder. Black oil sunflower seeds and suet are also big hits. I've noticed they prefer a feeder that's a bit more open, giving them space to land and even stash their treasures. Having a clean, fresh water source like a bird bath nearby is also super appealing to them, especially on hot days. Bringing in the Brilliant Cardinals: Cardinals, with their stunning red plumage, are another backyard favorite. They are primarily seed-eaters, and their top choice without a doubt is black oil sunflower seeds. I've found they prefer platform feeders or hoppers where they can comfortably perch and access the seeds. Safflower seeds are another good option, as many squirrels and other birds often ignore them, leaving more for your cardinals! Just like blue jays, a reliable water source and dense shrubs or trees for shelter make your yard an irresistible spot for them. Can You Befriend a Blue Jay? This is a fun one! While you might not get them to perch on your finger right away, blue jays are incredibly observant and can definitely recognize consistent providers. I've found that by regularly offering peanuts at the same time each day, they start to associate me with food. They might not come as close as a chickadee, but they'll often wait patiently for me to refill the feeder. It’s all about patience and consistency! Are Blue Jays Bullies at the Feeder? Blue jays definitely have a reputation for being assertive, and yes, sometimes they can be a bit pushy at the feeder! They're larger birds, and they know it. I've observed them chasing off smaller birds, especially when there's a limited supply of their favorite peanuts. To manage this, I've found it helpful to have multiple feeders spread out in different areas of the yard. This allows smaller, shyer birds like cardinals to have their own space. Also, using feeders that are designed for smaller birds (with smaller perches or cages) can help, while keeping a separate platform feeder loaded with peanuts for the jays. My BIRD FEEDER CAM has given me so many insights into these interactions, showing me how to create a more harmonious bird haven. Ultimately, creating a welcoming environment with diverse food sources, fresh water, and good cover will make your yard a hotspot for both blue jays and cardinals. Happy birdwatching!
