Deep Cleaning After Sickness

It's always a sigh of relief when the kids are finally over their sickness, right? But then comes the big task: making sure those lingering germs don't come back to haunt us! I know exactly what it's like living in a busy household with little ones; keeping things clean is a constant battle, but it's so important for their wellbeing. After a recent bout of illness, I dedicated a whole day to deep cleaning, especially their craft room, which became ground zero for all things snotty and germy last week! One of the questions I often get, and something I've looked into myself, is how to really disinfect a room after someone's been sick. It's more than just a quick wipe-down. First, ventilation is key. As I mentioned in my original post, opening windows helps clear out stale, germ-laden air. Let fresh air circulate for as long as possible. Then, it's about tackling surfaces. Think about all the high-touch areas: doorknobs, light switches, remote controls, toy boxes, and yes, even art supplies in the craft room. For fabric items like bedding, stuffed animals, and washable throws, a hot wash cycle with a good detergent is your best friend. For harder surfaces, disinfecting is crucial. Now, about those disinfectants – like Clorox wipes, which are a staple in my cleaning arsenal. A common question is about dwell time, especially for tricky things like mold and mildew. It's super important to read the label on any disinfecting product you use, as they all have different instructions. For killing viruses and bacteria (which is our main goal after sickness), most disinfecting wipes, including Clorox, require the surface to stay visibly wet for a specific amount of time – usually 4 minutes, sometimes up to 10 minutes, to be fully effective. This "dwell time" allows the chemicals to work their magic. Just wiping it on and immediately wiping it off won't cut it for proper disinfection. If the surface dries before the recommended time, you need to reapply. Regarding mold and mildew, while disinfecting wipes can kill some surface mold, they aren't typically designed for heavy-duty mold removal or prevention in damp areas. For persistent mold issues, you might need a dedicated mold cleaner or even professional help, especially if it's deeply embedded or covers a large area. But for general germ disinfection after sickness, focusing on that dwell time with your wipes is paramount. When I was cleaning the craft room, I made sure to wipe down all the plastic containers, tabletops, and even the kids' drawing tablets, leaving them wet for the required time before letting them air dry. Beyond the obvious, don't forget less common spots: phone screens, keyboards, game controllers, and even the handles on cleaning supplies themselves! After a sickness, I even give the car a good wipe down if the kids have been in it. It's all about creating that protective bubble again. This detailed approach might seem like a lot, but knowing I've done my best to clear out those lingering germs really gives me peace of mind and helps maintain a positive, healthy environment for my family.
