I've found that approaching 'christmas packing' with a little strategy can actually make next year's holiday setup so much smoother and more enjoyable. It’s not just about tossing things into a box; it’s about thoughtful organization that saves time and stress when the next holiday season rolls around.
First, I always start by decluttering. While packing away, I take a moment to evaluate my decorations and supplies. Did I use that tired old garland this year? Is that roll of snowman wrapping paper too small to be useful? If something is broken, completely used up, or I simply don't love it anymore, it's time to let it go. This prevents accumulating unnecessary clutter and ensures that what I store is truly useful and loved. It's amazing how much space you can free up by being a little ruthless!
Next, categorization is key. I like to group similar items together. For instance, all my ornaments go into one type of storage, lights into another, and then, of course, the gift wrapping essentials. For my wrapping supplies, which was the focus of my initial packing, I swear by a dedicated system. I use a large, clear plastic storage box, much like the one I just packed up with its blue box with a cartoon Christmas tree graphic, red snowflake box, and other festive bits. These clear boxes are fantastic because you can easily see what's inside without having to open every single one. This is especially helpful for quick retrieval next year.
For wrapping paper, I've found that storing rolls upright in a tall container or even in a garment bag (if you have the closet space) prevents them from getting crushed or wrinkled. Ribbons and bows, like my green and red plaid bows and striped ribbons, get their own smaller clear containers or even zip-top bags to keep them from tangling. Gift tags, scissors, and tape are all kept together in a small pouch within the main wrapping supply box. This way, everything I need for gift-wrapping is in one spot, ready to go. It’s so much better than hunting for scattered supplies next December!
Lights are another notorious item for getting tangled. My personal trick is to wrap them around a piece of cardboard or a dedicated light reel. This takes a little extra time upfront, but it pays off immensely when you're not battling a knotted mess next year. Fragile ornaments go back into their original packaging if possible, or I’ll wrap them in tissue paper and place them in specialty ornament storage boxes with dividers. This protects those cherished pieces that might have sentimental value.
Finally, labeling is non-negotiable. Every single clear plastic storage box gets a label outlining its contents – 'Christmas Ornaments - Fragile,' 'Outdoor Lights,' 'Gift Wrapping Supplies,' etc. This makes unpacking and decorating next year a breeze, as I know exactly where everything is. Choosing a dry, cool spot in your home for storage, like a closet or attic (if it's climate-controlled), helps preserve your decorations for years to come. Taking the time for organized 'christmas packing' now means less stress and more joy when the holidays roll around again!
