some medicinal herbs I found growing outside
I recently visited the sierra nevadas in California & ran into all of these beautiful herbs during my stay.
I’d never seen St. John’s Wort growing in the wild before so I was pretty psyched about that one (although I found out it’s technically invasive so it lowkey shouldn’t have been growing there, but I only saw a small patch the whole time I was there so I don’t think it’s too invasive but I hope it gets harvested anyways).
I also saw an abundance of yarrow with was really great to see. There was a lot of mullein too, mullein is also invasive to the area but still a very beneficial plant. And then I also saw a bunch of red clover.
It genuinely amazing to get to see medicine grow wildly. Although I’ve learnt to ID a lot of plants I like to use the picturethis app to tell me if something is invasive. I think a general rule is to not harvest over a third of a plant patch that you see growing but I think that goes out the window if something is invasive—you could probably take as much as you want any if not all.
Regardless, each of these plants have great medicinal benefits (I only named a few but there’s much more)! 💚

The Sierra Nevada region is home to a rich diversity of medicinal plants, many of which have been used for centuries in traditional medicine. St. John's Wort, often recognized for its antidepressant qualities, thrives in sunny, open areas. Yarrow is revered for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a valuable addition to any herbalist's toolkit. Mullein, known for its respiratory benefits, can help alleviate coughs and promote lung health. While exploring, make sure to utilize plant identification apps like PictureThis to ensure safe foraging practices. It's important to respect local flora by not harvesting over a third of any plant patch, except for invasive species like St. John's Wort and mullein, which can be harvested freely to help balance local ecosystems. Embracing the beauty and utility of wild plants can enhance your knowledge and appreciation of natural remedies, fostering a deeper connection to nature.
