Apple has a journal app?

I have mixed feelings.. i wish they incorporated a writing feature and allow you to choose templates! Because one of my favorite things about journaling is writing but it isn’t always convenient for me to carry my physical journal with me 24/7. I do like the recording feature and the emotions feature that is linked to the health app but other than that it’s not very exciting 🫤.

What do you think?

... Read moreWhen Apple announced their Journal app, like many of you, I was immediately intrigued! As someone who loves the idea of digital journaling but also cherishes my physical notebook, I had to dive in and see how it stacked up. After spending some time with it on my iPhone and iPad, I'm ready to share my honest thoughts. First off, what I really appreciated about the app was its seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. The recording feature is incredibly handy for capturing quick thoughts or reflections when I'm on the go and can't type. It feels very intuitive to just speak my mind. I also found the emotions feature, which links directly to the Health app, to be a clever touch. It's a subtle way to track my mental well-being over time, without having to manually log everything. Digging a bit deeper, I discovered the 'Insights' section, which was a pleasant surprise from what I saw in screenshots of others using the app. Seeing my journaling 'streaks' grow, along with stats like total entries and word count, is genuinely motivating. It’s like a little reward system for consistency, pushing me to keep going. Using the app on my iPad, especially with a stylus, made reviewing these stats and navigating the entries feel very fluid and engaging. The app's icon itself, with its beautiful butterfly-like design in blue, purple, and red hues, also gives it a lovely, inviting aesthetic. However, I do have to echo some of the initial mixed feelings I had. As much as I appreciate the convenience, I really wish Apple would incorporate a more robust writing feature. Sometimes, I just want to pour my heart out onto a blank digital page, similar to how I would in my physical journal, without being guided by prompts or specific entry types. The freedom of unstructured writing is a big part of my journaling process, and that's something I felt was missing. Another feature I longed for was the ability to choose or create templates. Imagine having pre-designed layouts for gratitude journaling, daily reflections, habit tracking, or even mood logs. This would add so much practicality and versatility, catering to different journaling styles that many of us seek in dedicated apps or even a '5 minute journal' format. Without these, it can sometimes feel a bit basic for those who enjoy structured reflection. So, is it a game-changer? For quick captures, integrating with your digital life, and seeing those motivating streaks, absolutely. It's a fantastic starting point for anyone curious about digital journaling on their iPhone or iPad. But for those of us who cherish the deep, freeform writing experience or prefer curated templates, you might find yourself, like me, still reaching for your beloved physical journal or exploring other dedicated iPhone journal app options out there. It's a solid app, but there's definitely room for it to grow into an even more powerful tool for self-reflection.

I like this app because it it convenient. I can right down my feelings the moment I feel them instead of searching for or carrying a notebook.
