Growing a chaos garden….Its chaotic…

This is my 2nd year growing a chaos garden! This year I have doubled the amount of seeds and variety of flowers.

This can be a bit of a stressful process. I plant my seeds in April when the weather breaks here in Ohio then I wait.

Within a few weeks sprouts are emerging. The stressful part is that it’s hard to tell what’s weeds and what’s flowers. I usually weed out what im positive is not flowers and then I’ll wait a few weeks for the plants to mature more. After about a month, I start to get flowers!

The most exciting part is not knowing what kinds of flowers survived and will bloom! Each week a new bunch of flowers will surprise me with bright blooms!

I sometimes will pick the flowers and bring them inside to put them in small bud vases or add them to my house plant propagation stations. I also enjoy pressing the flowers to make arrangements into wall art for my home.

I know it looks like a bit of a mess right now but in a month I’ll have a full over flowing garden with all different colors of flowers!

... Read moreGrowing a chaos garden can truly be a rewarding yet unpredictable gardening journey. From my own experience, one of the key lessons is patience and observation. When I started my chaos garden, especially in a region like Ohio with fluctuating spring weather, it was vital to plant seeds at the right time—typically when the weather starts to warm up in April. The mix of seeds like Alyssum, known for its delicate 'Carpet of Snow,' and French Double Dwarf Marigold has brought delightful surprises each season. A big challenge is distinguishing between weeds and flowers early on. I found that initial careful weeding, removing only obvious weeds, helps avoid accidentally pulling out seedlings that might bloom later. Waiting a few weeks before more extensive weeding allows plants to establish themselves better. Watching the garden evolve week by week is exciting because new flowers reveal themselves gradually, making each bloom feel like a special discovery. Another personal favorite aspect of chaos gardening is harvesting flowers to brighten indoor spaces. Using small bud vases for fresh blooms or incorporating pressed flowers into home decor adds a unique, natural touch. Plus, combining fresh flowers with houseplant propagation stations creates a living art display. Lastly, embrace the controlled chaos and the messiness during the growth phase—it’s all part of the charm. A fully flourishing chaos garden with a flood of colors is worth every moment of uncertainty. If you’re eager to add variety and spontaneity to your garden, giving chaos gardening a try can bring both relaxation and beauty to your gardening routine.
