Ten years ago, I lived and worked in the US Virgin Islands. It was my happy place. Nothing has ever topped it. Leaving was the right call at the time, but it broke my heart. I never went back, because leaving a second time would hit even harder.
For a decade, I kept looking for a place in the mainland that felt anything like the islands. Every answer pointed to the same spot. The Florida Keys.
In May, we’re heading there as full-time RVers. This move feels right. I feel ready. And I’m more excited than I have been in years.
Having spent ten incredible years in the US Virgin Islands, I know how deeply a place can embed itself in your heart. The stunning beaches, warm waters, and laid-back island lifestyle are hard to replicate anywhere else. After leaving, I searched extensively for a mainland spot that could offer even a fraction of that blissful feeling—and everywhere pointed me to the Florida Keys. As full-time RVers, we’re excited about the mobility and freedom that come with this lifestyle, allowing us to explore the various Keys at our own pace. Life in the Keys means waking up to breathtaking ocean views, enjoying fresh seafood markets, vibrant coral reefs for snorkeling and diving, and the friendly island community that makes you feel right at home. Plus, there’s a rich blend of cultural influences and festivals that bring the islands to life year-round. Transitioning to full-time RV living in the Keys has its challenges, including managing space and adapting to weather patterns like tropical storms. But for me, the opportunity to live close to the sea, embrace nature, and find peace in this island paradise outweighs anything else. If you’re considering a similar move, I recommend spending time in local RV parks to get a feel for the lifestyle and connecting with other full-time travelers who share their tips and experiences. The Florida Keys offers a vibrant community of like-minded people who value freedom, adventure, and the simple beauty of island life.
