Chaos gardening.

I have no idea what I am doing 🤣

... Read moreOkay, so you saw my original post – 'I have no idea what I am doing 🤣' – and honestly, that's still pretty much the vibe in my little chaos garden! But that's exactly the point, right? I decided to dive headfirst into chaos gardening because the idea of just letting nature do its thing, with a little nudge from me, sounded incredibly liberating. No meticulously planned rows, no strict companion planting charts (though I'm learning!), just a whole lot of trial and error. For anyone wondering, 'What IS chaos gardening?', from my perspective, it's about embracing imperfection and letting plants self-seed, spread, and grow where they feel happiest. I literally scattered a mix of flower and vegetable seeds of chaos – some old packets from last year, some new ones I impulse-bought – all over a designated patch. I figured, if it works, great! If not, well, it was a fun experiment. Now, to the big question everyone asks: does chaos gardening work? My honest answer, so far, is... kind of! It's definitely not for the faint of heart or those who crave a perfectly manicured look. What I've found is a surprising abundance in unexpected places. My calendulas are thriving amongst the kale, and a rogue tomato plant popped up right next to my basil. It’s a beautiful, wild mess. However, some areas are definitely more successful than others. It's teaching me a lot about plant resilience and what truly wants to grow in my specific microclimate without much fuss. One thing I've been mindful of, even in this chaotic environment, is dealing with unexpected visitors. While I'm not dealing with anything specific to pest control in Newport News (as I'm not located there), I've noticed that a diverse planting scheme seems to help with general garden critters! The sheer variety of plants, especially flowering ones, attracts beneficial insects that keep the 'bad' bugs in check. I haven't had to resort to strong pesticides, which is a huge win for me. I think the idea is that with so much plant life, pests don't concentrate on a single crop as much. It's a natural balancing act, though I'm still learning to identify which bugs are friends and which are foes in this jungle! If you're thinking of starting your own my little chaos garden, don't overthink it. Just grab some seeds, find a sunny spot, and let go of the need for perfection. You might be surprised by what thrives. It’s truly a journey of discovery, and even if I still don't know exactly what I'm doing, I'm having a blast watching this unpredictable beauty unfold.
